*SWAMP FOX PASSAGE RECLAMATION PROJECT RIBBON-CUTTING*
The Francis Marion National Forest plans to celebrate the completion of the Swamp Fox Passage Reclamation Project with a special ribbon-cutting event on Friday, March 11 at 10:30 a.m.
What started as a simple partnership between the Francis Marion National Forest and Berkeley Soil & Water Conservation District in 2017 evolved into a comprehensive, five-year project involving nine partners across the Lowcountry, including also the Palmetto Conservation Foundation. The event will occur rain or shine at the Highway 52 trailhead, with an optional hike to follow.
“Berkeley County is incredibly thankful to our state for Title II funding that trickles down and greatly benefits counties and their citizens. The Swamp Fox Passage will ultimately enhance tourism and quality of life opportunities for locals and tourists alike. Recreational success stories like this one are something our county leaders and elected officials will always champion and support." -Berkeley County Supervisor Johnny Cribb

*BLACK HISTORY MONTH HIGHLIGHT*
Did you know Maude Callen served as a key player in Berkeley County’s past?
The compassionate nurse-midwife helped forge the path for women’s healthcare in the County. She specifically catered to the healthcare needs of residents in impoverished areas in Pineville during the 1920s.
During Callen's more than 60-year career, she operated a community clinic inside her home and helped deliver more than 600 babies. Callen also passed on her midwife knowledge to other local women.
Callen’s contribution to medicine, women’s health and Berkeley County as a whole won’t soon be forgotten. Her incredible life and vast medical achievements are documented in a 12-page photo essay published in Life Magazine in 1951 and also decorate part of the walls of the first-floor lobby at the Roper St Francis Berkeley Hospital.
In 2017, Berkeley County Historical Society unveiled a historical marker honoring Callen.

The 2022 Black History Month theme is Black Health and Wellness.
Dr. Walter Evans was born in Berkeley County on September 23, 1891. He excelled at reading, so his parents sent him to school in Charleston and then to Claflin College in Orangeburg. By 1920, he had graduated from Boston University Medical School.
Evans returned to Moncks Corner and set up a medical practice, the first Black physician in the county. Dr. Evans treated both Black and white residents, though he was unable to practice at the local white hospital. He would accept food and other goods from patients unable to pay.
Dr. Evans died in 1967. In the 1990s, the road on which his house still stands was renamed Doctor Evans Road.
