"Shoot it in the shoulder to anchor him" is advice deer hunters have been passing down for generations. In principle, it is reasonable advice when shooting traditional supersonic deer cartridges like 308, 30-06, and others when presented with a broadside shot. The idea is to get the bullet crashing into the hard bones comprising the shoulder, shattering them, and immobilizing the deer. If the bullet remains mostly intact after contacting the bone without having its trajectory diverted too severely it should perforate vitals like lung tissue. A good supersonic projectile can have an explosive effect in soft and hard tissue making this all possible.

Subsonics are different, and because subs don't offer the same terminal effect of traditional supersonics, shot placement needs to be reconsidered. A good subsonic projectile relies on expansion and pe*******on as the primary wounding mechanisms.

Solid copper subsonics like our 188gr 300BLK and 280gr 8.6BLK expanders will have a more difficult time punching through shoulder bone when compared to supers. That's not to say they won't get through - rather the question is what's left of the expansion mechanism once the pill does get through. Oftentimes the projectile's expansion mechanism, the part of the sub that generates the soft tissue trauma, is compromised to the point where insufficient expansion and pe*******on can occur.

So in general with subs avoid shoulder shots on a broad side opportunity. Aim behind the shoulder, and if you're really dialed in, aim low to take out the pump (heart). With our projectiles even if you hit rib, they're still going to pe*****te and expand. And if you're lucky enough to slip it between the ribs, even better!
