đŸ§˜â€â™€ïž Bend So You Don’t Break

A Backbending Yoga Practice + A Lesson in Letting Go

There’s a reason we practice both strength and flexibility in yoga.

If we have flexibility without strength, we lack support. If we have strength without flexibility, we become rigid. Yoga teaches us to cultivate both—not only in our bodies, but in the way we move through life.

Sometimes we have to bend so we don’t break.

This week, we’ll explore that idea through a backbending-focused practice and two principles from yoga philosophy: Aparigraha and Santosha.

🌿 Aparigraha — Letting Go

Aparigraha is one of the Yamas, the ethical principles within the Eight Limbs of Yoga. It’s often translated as non-grasping or non-attachment.

Sometimes our rigidity comes from holding too tightly—to expectations, control, habits, or even the idea of what we think our yoga practice should look like.

Backbends give us an opportunity to practice something different.

Can we create strength without gripping?
Can we challenge ourselves without forcing?
Can we soften where we don’t need tension?
Can we let today’s version of the pose be enough?

We’ll gradually prepare the spine, shoulders, chest and hips before exploring backbending shapes such as Puppy Pose, Tiger Pose, Cobra, Locust, Low Lunge, Dancer, Bridge and Camel, with modifications and options along the way.

This isn’t about seeing who can bend the farthest. Depth isn’t the goal. Awareness is.

💜 And Eventually, Santosha

We’ll finish our practice with another lesson from the Eight Limbs: Santosha, one of the Niyamas, meaning contentment.

We can work toward something while still being content with where we are today.

Perhaps that’s the larger lesson behind our practice:

Strength gives us stability.
Flexibility gives us options.
Aparigraha teaches us when to let go.
Santosha reminds us that where we are can be enough.

On the mat—and sometimes in life—we learn to soften without collapsing, remain strong without becoming rigid, and bend so we don’t break.
