We are approaching our annual IBP Odd-Lift Challenge on May 4, 2019
After previously considering multiple "odd-lift" events, Iron Boy Powerlifting has decided to introduce the Jefferson Deadlift to the competition
The Jefferson Lift, also known as the Straddle Deadlift, is named after strongman Charles Jefferson and has been in physical culture since the late 1800s. Charles was known for his feats of strength in the Barnum & Bailey Circus
More recently, in 1996, Bob Hirsh set an impressive Jefferson Lift with a 702 pound pull at a body weight of 176 pounds
The lift is performed by straddling the barbell as it lays on the floor and deadlifting it to full extension. This lift is similar to our traditional deadlift but the emphasis is on the bar being under your hips instead of in front of them
The Jefferson Deadlift brings back memories of my training from the past and I'm excited to have the event in this year's meet
We're looking forward to the new addition to our Odd-Lift Challenge! I have dabbled with the lift over the years in my personal training and find it builds fundamental strength. When training this lift I found I had to develop core stability to maintain a torqued position. The Jefferson Lift also helped teach me to maintain a flat back throughout the duration of my traditional sumo deadlift today. This lift could also promote better form for the squat and deadlift by teaching you to keep your hips open without the knees collapsing inward. It could also translate to quad and overall leg strength. I feel it is important to train the Jefferson Deadlift by alternating which leg is forward to avoid over or under development of one side. For example, I've always alternated my grip on the traditional deadlift in my training to promote symmetrical strength. It reminds me of my training in Tai Chi; you have to train both sides equally. The more you can mimic a trap bar deadlift the more proficient you will be at this event
