Clay-Battelle volleyball sweeps Madonna, Trinity Christian in Mason-Dixon tri-match - NCWV SportsCorner 09/20/2022

MORGANTOWN — It’s amazing the turnaround which can happen in just a few weeks.

Clay-Battelle volleyball started their season on a losing streak, dropping their first five contests. Now, after asserting their dominance in a sweep of Madonna and Trinity Christian in tri-match action on Monday, the Cee-Bees have knocked off five straight in-state opponents and sit second in the Mason-Dixon Conference.

“We’ve played a tough schedule this year and lost to some really good teams. We got healthy, we were hurting the first part of the year, and the first five games we did not have a full line-up. We had a lot of injuries and a lot of sicknesses at the beginning of the year, and we’re finally gelling and coming together,” said Clay-Battelle head coach Matt Wood.

Defense is key for Morgantown in 51-31 win over University in Regional Final - NCWV SportsCorner 03/03/2022

The Rowdy Center sits at the corner of Wilson Avenue and Prairie Avenue in the quiet South Park neighborhood of Morgantown. The affectionate name refers to the home gymnasium for the Morgantown High School. The Mohigan basketball teams in particular have known much success inside the building; for Morgantown girls’ basketball, much of that recent success has come at the hands of current head coach Jason White.

White has earned three state championships with the Mohigans, and has taken the program on numerous trips to the state championship tournament in Charleston. He has helped build a perennial powerhouse in the state. But as his program took the court at home against cross-town rival University in Wednesday’s Class AAAA Regional Final, he knew it was likely his final time coaching at The Rowdy Center — and his last chance to make it to Charleston to get one more state title for the Mohigans.

“More than anything else, there was a little extra pressure I thought on my shoulders tonight,” White said. “I got in here about 4:30, I sat down on that last seat on the bench, and just looked up at those banners and thought about all the kids that have come through the program, and you get a little bit emotional just thinking about like this is the last time you get to do it in this gym.”

University sophomore Ella Simpson playing crucial role for young team - NCWV SportsCorner 02/12/2022

MORGANTOWN, W.Va — As a team with a limited senior presence, it can be difficult to find consistent play and leadership. That’s why University sophomore Ella Simpson has been a crucial asset to her team this season.

As the Hawks (7-9) battled back-and-forth with Class AAA No. 1 Fairmont Senior in an upset bid that turned into a 47-43 loss, Simpson was a leader for her team. She would pace University in scoring with 17 points, and would tie for second on the team on the boards with seven rebounds.

“I thought today was a super important game for me to step up and lead my team…I mentally prepared and knew I had to have a really good game tonight,” Simpson said.

Simpson’s play against Fairmont Senior was no anomaly, and University head coach Nick Lusk has described having her step up as “big” for the team as the season goes on.

No. 1 Fairmont Senior escapes thriller against University with 47-43 win - NCWV SportsCorner 02/11/2022

MORGANTOWN, W.Va — It was late in the fourth quarter Thursday night as University girls basketball hosted Class AAA No. 1 Fairmont Senior, and the Hawks had their top-ranked foes on the ropes.

The Polar Bears had held the lead since the second quarter, but an 8-0 run to start the final period of play put the Hawks back on top with just a few minutes to play in the game; it appeared that Fairmont Senior might be on their way to just their second loss of the season.

That’s when the Polar Bears’ Marley Washenitz took control of her team’s destiny. She secured the ball on the offensive end of the court, created space between her and University defenders with a pair of dribbles, then pulled up and drained a huge three-point basket. Suddenly, the Polar Bears were back in the lead with under two minutes to play.
