I am a lesson horse.
I am a horse that isn’t as recognized as the top hunter jumpers, the best western pleasure horse, or the 1D barrel horse, I am a lesson horse. I am the backbone of the foundation to do all of those things. I am a lesson horse.

I am not loved by one person. I am loved by several people. I don’t have my person, I have my people. I am a lesson horse.

I will teach your child and yourself more than just to ride. I will bring your child out of their shell. I will teach your child about life. I will be yours and their shoulder to cry on. I am a lesson horse.

I will bring my family the joy of teaching kids. I will bring my families business growth. I am so loved by my family, even if they don’t express it everyday. My family allows others to show me love and enjoy me. I am a lesson horse.

At the end of your childs’ journey on a lesson horse, they will out grow me. They will find one that jumps higher, a horse that is show quality, a horse much faster than me. But, I will never outgrow being a lesson horse. I will be the one that loved your child and helped your child grow into the rider and person they are. I am a lesson horse.

At the end of my time as a lesson horse; I will be covered in grey hair. Each grey hair came from each hour I spent as a lesson horse. I will be in a field of green grass, I will be taken care of as I was when I was a lesson horse. I will watch your child from across the pasture love her new horse. But, I will love your child more than any horse can. I will be the backbone of the business, the family, and your child. Don’t forget about me, I am a lesson horse.

I am a lesson horse.

The Great Lie About "Soft Hands": Why It All Starts in the Seat

We hear it in almost every lesson: "Soften your hands! Relax your fingers!"
It sounds simple enough. So we try to loosen our grip, open our fingers, or soften our wrists. But the moment we do, the horse drops onto their forehand, Speeds up, or the reins go completely floppy. Then, out of instinct, we grab hold again.
Here is the truth every rider needs to hear: Soft hands do not start in your fingers.
You cannot give a soft, quiet hand to your horse if your hands are secretly helping you stay in the saddle. True softness isn't a technique you do with your wrists; it is the natural byproduct of an independent seat.

The Day My Hands Stopped "Holding On"
When I first started riding high-frequency, sensitive Spanish horses, I quickly realized that every tiny bit of tension in my body was magnified tenfold in my mare’s mouth.
If my hips were tight, her back locked up. If I lost my balance for a split second and caught myself on the reins, she would instantly raise her head or brace her jaw. She was an unedited mirror. She wasn't being difficult, she was simply telling me, "Your hands are interfering because your body isn't carrying itself."
That was my wake up call. I realized that if I wanted her to carry her own body in true self-carriage, I had to carry mine first.

What an Independent Seat Actually Feels Like
An independent seat simply means your upper body, your seat, and your hands can all act separately without throwing each other off balance.
Imagine sitting on a horse not as "holding on," but as balancing on a gym ball that is moving beneath you:

The Elastic Pelvis: Your hips have to act like shock absorbers. Instead of gripping with your knees or thighs, which instantly tightens your back, your hip joints open up and absorb the swing of the horse’s spine.

Core Stability, Not Rigidity: Your strength comes from deep in your core, not from your shoulders or arms. When your core is tall and anchored, your shoulders drop naturally, and your arms can hang freely from your body.

The "Breathing" Elbow: Your hands are not static blocks of wood tied to the bit. They are an extension of your back, connected through elastic elbows that softly follow the natural, rhythmic motion of the horse's neck in every walk and canter stride.
When your seat is truly independent, your hands become completely free. They no longer exist to hold you up, stop the horse, or force their head into a frame. They exist purely to hold a gentle, uninterrupted conversation.

The Test of Softness:
In classical riding, there is a beautiful, simple test to see if your horse is relying on your hands or carrying themselves: giving the reins.

While trotting or cantering, softly push both hands forward toward the horse's ears for three or four strides.
Does your horse maintain their rhythm, frame, and self-carriage on their own?
Or do they instantly surge forward, fall onto their front legs, or lose their balance?
If they fall apart the second you yield, they weren't balanced, they were using your hands as a fifth leg. When you build an independent seat and stop holding them up, you give your horse the freedom to find their own center of gravity.

A Thought to Take to the Arena Today
Softness is never about letting the reins go slack and abandoning your horse. It is about non interference.
It is the commitment to step into such total balance with your own body that your hands never block, pull, or restrict the horse's energy. When you offer a sensitive horse a seat that is anchored and hands that are quiet, they stop bracing against you and the ride transforms from a constant physical negotiation into a quiet, effortless dance.

This right here is why I love teaching lessons! This little girl right here has worked so hard to gain her confidence back after a fall during a lesson. She is back to trotting and cantering and just look at that smile on her face, it says it all! 🥰🐴

Parents — let your kids do the boring stuff.

If they can’t walk and steer, they can’t trot and steer.
If they can’t balance at the trot, they aren’t ready to canter.
If they can’t go catch their own horse, groom it, tack it up and take responsibility for it, how are they supposed to lead that horse from the saddle?

Going faster does not equal getting better. Strapping your kid to a horse and sending them into the arena isn’t making them better, it’s setting them up to get hurt.

You might think watching your kid walk circles isn’t exciting. You might think they should be cantering, jumping, running barrels or “doing more.”

But sometimes they’re simply not ready.

And respectfully — that’s why you hired an instructor. Because knowing how and when to progress a rider is our job.

We aren’t holding your kid back. We’re building the foundation that keeps them safe and makes them GOOD.

You don’t get to skip the boring stuff just because it’s boring.

We are in the middle of the week of the last summer camp before school starts. Lots of fun so far even with it being so hot 🥵! Awesome group of kids. We got smart and decided to do a lot of the riding in the shaded area of the arena. Enjoy the pics so far!

So, the one horse who never spooks at anything is literally about to either hurt herself (or me) over the freaking fireworks! She is in the outside stall and hearing them is not as bad as her seeing them. She is totally losing it. Going to be a very long night out here. They are going off all around us. Poor girl, I debated about turning them out and very glad I didn’t because she would have ran right through the fence! I am sitting out here with her and she is a little better. Hope and pray all my horse peeps and their horses are ok.🐴🙏❤️😩

It has taken me a couple weeks to post this. Over the many years of horses in my life and the losses of many a great one, this one kinda hit me hard. I guess because it was the final end of the dynamic duo. Stormy has been in my life for 21 years! We lost his buddy “Spice” a few years ago and “Stormy” has crossed the rainbow bridge and back with his buddy now. I will never forget the day Libby (Barn Mom) came into the barn telling me about this little guy in a back yard with weeds taller than him and we have to get him! So of course, we did! Oh the many adventures over the years with these two! The joy and smiles from the children. The two adventures I think of the most is when I get a call in the middle of the night and they got out of turn out area and was running around in Bent Tree! Took a lil while to catch them with all the winding roads and hills! Then moved here to Tennessee and they escaped again up the mountain behind the barn! We got lucky again and found them! I could write a book about all their shenanigans. I am very blessed to have had them and have so many photos and memories! Running free now ❤️🐴💔 All my barn girls from GA to TN share your stories and photos!
