Sun City Cycle & Sports in Moses Lake sells class 2 E-bikes that are allowed on all trails and roads in WA! Come check us out!! 312B Division - downtown Moses Lake!

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office is seeing an increase in electric motorcycles being operated on county roads and city streets.

As these vehicles become more popular, we want to help riders and families understand Washington’s laws and the safety requirements that apply to them.

Washington state recently updated its laws through Enhanced Substitute Senate Bill (ESSB) 6110 to better define the difference between electric-assisted bicycles (e-bikes) and electric motorcycles. (See https://bit.ly/49BSR2B)

Beginning next Thursday, June 11, 2026, an electric-assisted bicycle in Washington must:

• Have fully operable pedals
• Have an electric motor rated at 750 watts or less
• Meet the requirements of one of Washington’s three e-bike classes (See https://bit.ly/4uR25AE)

If a vehicle does not meet the legal definition of an e-bike, it may be regulated as a motorcycle, moped, or another type of motor vehicle under Washington law.

Families and riders should know that electric motorcycles operated on public roads may be subject to requirements such as:

• A valid driver's license
• Vehicle registration
• Insurance
• Helmet requirements
• Compliance with all traffic laws

Parents and guardians play an important role in helping young riders understand these requirements and make safe choices. Washington law may hold parents or guardians responsible if they knowingly allow an unlicensed juvenile to operate a motor vehicle.

Our goal is education, prevention, and safety. We recognize that many riders and families may not be aware of how state law classifies these vehicles or what requirements apply. Taking time to learn the rules can help prevent crashes, injuries, citations, and other unintended consequences.

These laws are in place to protect everyone who uses our roads, including riders, drivers, pedestrians, and families. By understanding the law and using these vehicles responsibly, we can work together to help keep our community safe.

Remember that your elected state representatives serve as your voice in government. Please contact them if you are concerned about state laws.
