As some of you may know, Scouting is a big reason how Liz and I ended up together for 31 years and counting, and how we ended up owning our own little "backcountry camp". Using Liz's graduation money to buy a Wenonah Saranac canoe for a 10 day adventure in the Boundary Waters is how we solidified our love of paddling. We never (or haven't yet) worked at Northern Tier High Adventure, the sister high adventure outfitter to Philmont where Liz and I met in 1995. The recent fires and closures have cut short the season at Northern Tier.

If you've been following the news you may have heard about the harrowing escapes by the indigenous folks that make the northwoods their home, the adventurers who had traveled deep into the bush only to be chased by flames, and the many camps that had to extraordinary things to save what they could. At Northern Tier High Adventure part of that was put onto the staff. They were tasked with evacuating the crews and also finding alternatives for those that traveled so far.

A 90's Philmont colleague of ours, David O'Neill, is now the Director of Wilderness Adventures at Northern Tier. We share close friends but never really crossed paths until Topher (our oldest) began his Philmont tenure when David was in leadership there. He says it took the community to accomplish what they have. The staff, the locals, even Wenonah canoe themselves sent their canoe hauler to move their equipment to a new temporary location. Arriving scouts will now have a slightly different adventure far away from the fires.

So it is with a big Buckley's man shout out that we salute David and his team. 🛶🛶
