I have been involved with the game of baseball for over 30 years. I was a 21st round draft pick by the Reds out of HS but injured during my record setting college career. Since my playing days ended I have coached numerous levels including HS and have worked with a number of players that went on to play college. My approach is a little different as I focus on what the individual player needs to do to be successful vs.

We didn’t hit again last night. Ace said “but hitting is what we do, it’s the fun part!” My reply, “You won’t forget how to hit and I don’t have a Time Machine. In two years, we can fix your swing, but we can’t go back and make Dem GAINS!” So he worked out, unfun, just work, to be repeated, over and over and over. Build the skills, then build the body, then refine.
I love this. Be delusional enough to think you are always the best player on the field/in a room and hungry enough to work so it’s true!!

Someone asked on another page “at what point does winning become important?”.
My answer here is something we talk about as an organization and something more people need to understand about travel baseball.
“It is all practice until someone’s livelihood depends on the outcome of the game!”
Travel coaches, at our core, should be teachers and mentors to help guide our players to be the best they can be. We don’t focus on winning the games, we focus on winning every pitch, every at bat, every opportunity we have to get better. If we have successful kids on and off the field, we have succeeded.
HS and College coaches get paid to win….period exclamation point. The outcome of the games matter, because their livelihood is impacted by it.

Same kid, lots of different positions that you see people teach. He has never heard anything about getting to slot, money gap, or finishing high. All he has ever heard in his life is “get into your hip and scap, drive into the ground, get the barrel behind the ball, and extend through contact”. It’s a lot, but it is a progression of those actions that create the positions, not the opposite. Start with the moves and your swing has adjustability. Then the pitch location determines the other positions.

We could have more “success” with a more disciplined approach at the plate, but you can’t create a yes,yes,yes mindset and want kids to walk at the same time. As kids get older, we can shift to more of an “ aggressive in your zone” approach, but until ABS is everywhere aggressive hitters are successful hitters. Side note, no one remembers that awesome walk they had, they remember hits and diving plays!
