The Cape Romain Lighthouse Preservation Society is beginning their work on the taller lighthouse to protect the integrity and replace the stairs. They are looking for volunteers to "help transport people and supplies to the island, set up camp, and assist with other on-site needs as the project gets underway."

If you love this kind of thing, you can be a part of preserving an icon of South Carolina's maritime history.

Join Capt. Chris Crolley, Drew Lanham, Dana Beach and Joel Caldwell at the Charleston Library Society on October 15 from 6-7 p.m. to to see 2 short films and listen to a discussion about near-shore and wild nesting islands on our coast.

Along the SC coast, a series of near-shore and wild islands provides key habitat for nesting and migratory birds, but overdevelopment, habitat loss, and sea-level rise threaten them.

In 2025, the Coastal Expeditions Foundation sponsored a hydrographic investigation of 20,000 acres around Deveaux Bank to help researchers understand the sediment movement around this critical nesting island.

"By mapping what is happening below the waterline, we can better understand how sediment moves through the entire inlet system and use that knowledge to guide future management."

Coastal Expeditions is committed to protecting the places we explore through our non-profit arm the Coastal Expeditions Foundation.

Our mission is to support hatchlings, fledglings and young earthlings, and this data reveals how sediment movement was contributing to the decline of existing habitat and the emergence of a new shoal for future seabirds to nest and rest.

Imagine the thrill of standing in a sea kayak with your classmates in the Charleston Harbor.

This is the Marine Science class from Laing Middle School in Mount Pleasant and they were awesome at the Human Sail.

When kids come on a Coastal Expeditions kayaking field trip the learn outdoor skills, connect with the world around them- and sometimes do something that pushes them out of their comfort zone.

Working together, all of the kids are able to stand in this team building activity.
