Chapel Hill Cross Country Makes History at Galveston Beach Run Invitational

The Chapel Hill Red Devils Cross Country team traveled to the Galveston Beach Run Invitational, where runners had the unique opportunity to compete on the beach for the first time. With more than 400 runners in the boys race and over 250 runners in the girls race, the meet provided a memorable experience and plenty of tough competition.

The highlight of the meet came from Moises Netro, who made Chapel Hill history by becoming the first Chapel Hill runner to medal at the Galveston Beach Run Invitational. Netro finished 29th overall with a time of 18:20, an impressive performance in a field of more than 400 competitors.

Varsity Boys

Chapel Hill’s boys competed well against the massive field. They placed 22nd out of 45 teams. Andres Delgado finished 80th in 19:27, followed by Sloan Abbott in 137th with a time of 20:25. Jose Renteria placed 139th in 20:26, Sean Acuna finished 242nd in 21:54, Diego Cedillo placed 335th in 24:17, and Gavin Swafford finished 378th in 26:25.

Varsity Girls

On the girls side, the Varsity Girls competed in a 5K race on the beach, adding an extra challenge as they battled the sand throughout the course. Elizabeth McKellar led Chapel Hill with a 130th-place finish and a time of 26:45. Kimberlee Carter finished 206th in 31:22, while Kaelynn Russell placed 217th with a time of 32:45.

Competing in a 5K on the beach was a new experience for the Lady Devils, and they did a great job taking on the longer distance and difficult running surface.

More than the results, the Galveston Beach Run Invitational gave the Red Devils a chance to experience something completely different from a traditional cross country course. Running on the sand and alongside the Gulf made for a challenging but fun experience that the team will remember.

Congratulations to all of our Chapel Hill runners, and a special congratulations to Moises Netro for making Red Devil history with Chapel Hill’s first medal at the Galveston Beach Run Invitational!
