Kevin should be back at Cuesta Park this Sunday, 8/27, if all goes as planned, and available to teach beginning Wu Hao Tai Chi. It's free! Try to get there by 9AM. We usually practice on or near the volleyball court.
Since we have been posting beginner training as Facebook events, we have yet to see a single signup, although they appear to have brought out a few of our more advanced friends, and this is itself an excellent result. However we will suspend posting as FB events for the next few weeks. Beginners are still and always welcome. This one will be present next Sunday, 7/30 if all goes as planned, and available to introduce other beginners to Wu Hao. However this one will be absent Sunday 8/6. The other, even awesomer practitioners should be there however, so do come on down, if so moved. Peace.
Advanced Wu Hao practitioner Jack Liou (at least, they are more advanced than your humble correspondent) gave us some "pointers" last Sunday that this one wants to share. We noticed that he points his "empty" toe each time before out-stepping or kicking, and he explained that this helps slow down the action and put focus on the "full" leg, such that we can "sink" into the full foot, and feel our stable strength, with head lined up directly over foot, before stepping out or kicking. Excellent advice, Jack. This one is devoting personal practice this week to understanding and attempting to build this habit. It has been challenging. It is so tempting to use momentum, when what we really want is to use Qi. Best wishes to all who practice.
Here is something your humble correspondent wishes someone had explained (or probably that they had listened to better) sooner. The simplest way to experience the flow of qi is to relax, because qi flows to the parts we relax, and it's easier to feel it in the part relaxed. So, to move qi from neck to hands, relax the neck, then the shoulders, then the upper arms, then the lower arms and finally the hands and fingers, and repeat. Further, by imagining that something is flowing in and/or out of our hands, we can feel qi even more. It's not all in our heads! But it might be in our hands, which are especially sensitive. The study of qi should commence in the hands, Sifu says. Good qi to you!
