🔥 Have your heating system inspected and serviced before you need it.
🪵 Have your chimney and fireplace cleaned and inspected.
🧯 Check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and replace batteries as needed.

A few simple steps can help keep your home, family, and community safe all season long.

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that the Old Mystic Fire Department mourns the passing of District Board Vice President Carl Strand, Jr.
For more than half a century, Carl was a steadfast pillar of the Old Mystic Fire Department. His dedication, leadership, and unwavering belief in this organization helped shape not only where we have been, but also where we are today. Serving on the District Board for more than 50 years, including over 30 years as its President, Carl devoted an extraordinary part of his life to the Department and the community it serves.
Carl was a visionary who believed deeply in the future and continued progress of the Old Mystic Fire Department. He understood the importance of growth, innovation, and embracing new opportunities. Supporting the evolution of the Department, Carl always looked toward what was possible and how we could better serve our community.
His leadership and vision were instrumental in transforming the Old Mystic Fire Department into the thriving combination department it is today. Carl spearheaded the construction of the Headquarters and Station 1 buildings that continue to serve as the foundation of our operations, creating a lasting physical legacy that will stand for generations.
But Carl’s legacy reaches far beyond the buildings, meetings, and decisions that marked his many years of service. He was eloquent, passionate, and steadfast in his convictions. Fierce in his faith and unwavering in his beliefs, Carl approached life and service with a deep sense of purpose. He cared profoundly about the Old Mystic Fire Department, its members, and its future.
To so many, Carl was more than a Board member or leader. He was a constant presence, a trusted voice, and one of the strongest advocates this Department has ever known. His influence can be seen throughout our organization and will continue to be felt in the generations of members who follow.
Today, we mourn the loss of a remarkable man and a dear member of the Old Mystic Fire Department family. At the same time, we give thanks for the incredible life of service he shared with us and the indelible mark he leaves behind.
Rest easy, Carl. Your watch may be over, but your legacy will live on within these walls, in the Department you loved, and in the hearts of all those whose lives you touched.
You will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always a part of the Old Mystic Fire Department.

September 11, 2001 — We Remember.
Today, we remember the lives forever changed and the many innocent lives lost on September 11, 2001.
For those who wear the badge, this day carries a weight that words can hardly express. We especially remember the 343 firefighters and all the first responders who ran toward danger while others were running away.
They climbed those stairs knowing there was danger ahead. They went anyway.
They were brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, friends, and fellow firefighters. They answered the call to serve, and on that day, they made the ultimate sacrifice.
Twenty-five years later, their courage, their names, and their sacrifice remain with us.
We remember those who were lost.
We honor those who served.
We stand with the families who continue to carry their loss.
And we will never forget.
