Making the choice to live a healthy lifestyle isn’t always easy. Nope! In fact, it can be hard sometimes. Heck, it can be hard a lot of the time! But if you can change your mindset by looking at the whole picture and realizing that all of these choices effect us at a cellular level, perhaps our choices could be less difficult. When we realize how much lack of sleep truly effects us perhaps staying up too late binge watching your new favorite series on Netflix become less tempting. When we remember that everything we eat turns into fuel for our body and, depending on our choices, the body will break it down and turn it into energy or store it as fat, making a healthier food choice can become less challenging. The list goes on. When we incorporate healthy lifestyle changes, we begin to feel good both mentally and physically. But also remember to give yourself grace. Every day is a new day and new start.

We honor the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States armed forces and have given their lives for our freedom. This Memorial Day we honor you, if your family is one of those who burdened that sacrifice, we invite you to please join us on the beach for a free class. It's an unmentionable gesture for the freedoms we fight to hold onto. If you are not a person who practices yoga.

Check out what’s going on at Vanderbilt beach. It will be wonderful once it’s complete. In the meantime, not the most serene spot for your yoga practice. We’ve relocated to Pelican Bay Community Park until we can return to the beach. See ya there!

Patanjalie's 8 Limbs of Yoga are intended as guidelines to living a life of meaning & purpose.

The 1st Limb - Yamas; moral codes/ethical guidelines, provide ways to build a better relationship with the world & with ourselves.

These 'moral vows' are completely universal, no matter who you are or where you come from, your current situation or where you're heading.

We've studied the 1st 4 of the 5 Yamas;

Ahimsa - non-harming. It's a reminder that all things can come from a place of love.

Satya - telling the truth. It's about finding our truth, our true essence' or 'true nature'. It's about being truthful with ourselves & others.

Asteya - not taking that which is not given freely. Finding small but significant ways we steal from ourselves in live & on the mat.

Brahmacharya - right use of energy. The practice of experiencing the pleasure, wonder, and mystery of life without over-indulgence.

This week - the 5th Yama;
Aparigraha - non-attachment. It is the art of letting go & living life with open palms, minds & hearts so that all things, concepts, or people enter, exist, & exit effortlessly, without creating bo***ge or dependency.

All of this is coming, of course, at a perfect time in my own life as my youngest daughter is getting married in just 18 days. And though she has not lived 'at home' for 5 years now, it is still challenging to let go of how it used to be. But, life is always changing. Though I could not be happier for her, that's all you want for your children after all, is for them to be happy, healthy and to be loved and cherished by their 'person', still it's not that easy. And so, I practice aparigraha, realizing all things change, and trying not to hold on to them. In my heart she will always be my little girl and I love her with everything I have, unconditionally (the love that is left when you let go of all you love). I will happily share her with him, his family & his friends. And I will feel blessed to know that she is loved by so many.

It's about letting go, non-possessiveness, generosity,

Yoga is the practice of awareness. The steps we take along the path should lead us to a clearer understanding of ourselves & the world round us. 04/10/2023

Brahmacharya - Right use of energy. What does that mean to you? In yoga philosophy Brahmacharya teaches to strive for right use of energy, moderation, non-excess. The practice of experiencing the pleasure, wonder, & mystery of life without over-indulgence. It’s temperance, self-regulation, proper use of energy.

Brahmacharya can be translated as, “One who is established in a way of God or the creative force.” When you choose to look at yourself and your energy as sacred, the practice of moderation becomes easier and an act of honoring the divine within.

How can we find ways to practice Brahmacharya that aligns with our needs?

Ask yourself these questions
· Where do I spend my energy?
· When does my energy get drained?
· What areas of my life have excess? Where do I over-indulge? (Food? Social Media? Work? Etc)
· Why do I move past the feeling of having enough into excess?
· How can I make the best use of my vital energy?

Ways to practice Brahmacharya:
· Eat slowly. Use your breath to savor anything you take in.
· Don’t chug beverages or water. Use deep breaths to scan the body and connect with subtle energy shifts as you moderately take the beverage in.
· Notice when you have the impulse to indulge in more. Gently remind yourself, that less is more. Be sure to eat enough and not restrict foods. Use moderation as a tool to find your healthy balance. That balance is difference for everyone.
· Notice what emotions and thoughts rise when you have the impulse to indulge. Notice the same when practicing moderation. Objectively observe and record what you learn.
· Listen to your body.
· Be in silence 1x/day for 5-10 minutes.
· Schedule times to check social media and email. Place time limit on how long you spend using these tools. Consider removing social media applications from phones and devices.
· Go to bed early.
· Schedule 1 day a week where you don’t plan anything for this time. During this time, do what feels right for you and honors your time, energy, and needs. Notice when you physically push yourself. How can you use less physical energy to achieve the action or posture?

Reverse warrior pose is a graceful gesture of strength.

Sometimes known as ‘peaceful warrior’ pose, it’s benefits include calming the mind.

I love this photo of these yogis finding the version of reverse/peaceful warrior that is right for them. A great example of finding that balance between effort (gesture of strength) and ease (calming the mind).

Finding the balance between effort and ease. That can be tricky right?! And not just on our yoga mats but in many areas of our lives. Now consider thinking about that balance as being steady and comfortable. I don't know about you but that seems more achievable to me 🙌
In our yoga practice, can we maintain a steady and comfortable breath from the beginning to the end of our practice (you know that includes those challenging poses right 😅)? Remaining steady and comfortable throughout your practice takes practice! Lots and lots of practice. You must feel strong enough to move in ways that help you, but you must feel fluid and free enough that you aren't building or holding unnecessary tension. This balance between effort and ease is at the heart of every yoga practice both on and off the mat.

TUESDAY 9AM - GENTLE HATHA WITH SHEILA - Vanderbilt Beach
HOW YOU DO ANYTHING IS HOW YOU DO EVERYTHING
If you've been to my classes you've probably heard me say, "...notice how you feel when..., without judgement, just as an observation, an experiment...a way of gathering information about yourself".
Our yoga mat is where we can investigate how we do anything and everything, and where we can create helpful new habits that work off the mat.
Consider thinking of your mat as a lab for observation. As we observe how we move, breathe, think, and feel on the mat is both a reflection of how we do everything in our lives and an opportunity to know better, then do better.
Your practice is darshana: a lens, a vision of yourself, both as you are and as you aspire to be. The truism "how you do anything is how you do everything" echos this yoga wisdom.
Join me tomorrow for some experiments, observations and gathering of information.

Being grateful can change everything. By focusing on what we do have instead of what we don’t, we create more goodness. Gratitude is really a mindset. It’s being thankful for all things. It’s appreciating the good and the bad. Yes! And not just appreciate, but also welcome trials because we know they can shape us in positive ways when we respond to them with an open mind and heart. Join us tomorrow as we infuse our yoga practice with gratitude. Thursday, 11/17 at 9am - Pelican Bay Park. Check out Lo's Yoga Naples for the full schedule.

October is Depression and Mental Health Awareness Month. Our mental health is not unlike our physical health. We can’t just work really hard to reach a goal and then think we are done, we no longer need to work on it. We have to tend to it regularly. Hurricane Ian really rocked our world recently. Many lives have been forever changed. It has been A LOT to deal with. Physically, with the mass clean up efforts. But, also mentally, for those who relive it everyday due to the trauma they experienced, for those who have lost friends and loved ones, those who have lost their homes, those who have lost businesses, those who have lost employment, the list goes on. Yoga can help. One of the many ways yoga can help is through the breath work that we practice. It can help quite the mind and calm the central nervous system. It can truly help you find calm in the storm. Join me Tuesday 9am at Pelican Bay Community Park.

Temporary Class Location Changes 10/06/2022

Temporary Class Location Changes We're creatively finding ways to continue our yoga practice. Please bare with us as we navigate through this all together.

10/03/2022

It is difficult to comprehend the impact Ian has made on so many lives. Our hearts and prayers are with those who have lost so much. The sirens continue to sound. They have not stopped since the very moment the storm settled enough for first responders to disperse. The sound of search and rescue choppers have filled the air. My prayers to those being rescued and my gratitude to the brave souls doing the recusing. Through all of this, grateful is a word I’ve heard over and over. Not only ringing in my own 2 ears but from the mouths of all those I have spoken with. While we are all incredibly saddened by things lost due to Hurricane Ian, It’s important for us remember things gained….new faith, new friendships, kindness from strangers, faith expressed through others. The gratitude list goes on. The lives lost will not be forgotten. It makes me even more grateful for the lives of those spared. The memories we have cannot be taken. Hopefully you can take a few moments to think of few things you are grateful for right now.

09/21/2022

Join me tomorrow, Thursday, at 9am on Vanderbilt Beach for a Gentle Hatha class. Cost is only $10 per class. Bring you towel, water and sunscreen.
Make sure that all you do you do and how you do it is done in peace and harmony. Your vibrations effect others.

Although it will be hard to leave my family & friends in Texas this week, I am excited to see my Florida family & friends next week! Starting Wednesday the 21st I’ll be back at The Strand for Aqua Sculpt and Thursday the 22nd I’ll be back at Vanderbilt Beach for Gentle Hatha Yoga.

If we’re not careful, we can let other peoples opinions and negative attitudes drag us down. But remember, there’s always a different way to look at things (like the bright 😎 side). Even when things around you are looking 👀bleak ⛈, remind yourself that looks can be deceiving. Reality is, there are just some people that see the glass half empty, you can choose to see it half full. This world 🌎 IS a beautiful place. Filled with beautiful people 👨🏼‍🍳🧑‍🎤👩🏽‍🌾, places 🌄🏞 and things. Decide how you want to see 😉

Beach Yoga 🏖 🧘🏻‍♀️ Thursday 9:30 Vanderbilt Beach Exploring
❤️❤️Living Authentically❤️❤️
Not always easy. In fact, often in can seem quite difficult 😰 It takes courage to be authentic, to be your whole self. To be fulfilled and successful we have to bring all of our gift, talents, fears, doubts, insecurities, our heart, our soul. The things that matter most to us. Yes, this does involve a lot of courage. Brenea Brown says, “You can’t get to courage without walking through vulnerability.” Vulnerability! Yikes 😱 that can also be hard right? Because it doesn’t always feel good, it’s uncomfortable, it’s scary. There are many reasons for that that discomfort. On a superficial level - we don’t want to look bad, we don’t want other people to judge us. On a deeper level, it’s hard because we’ve all experienced pain, disappointment & loss in our lives. So, we hold back. It takes courage to be vulnerable. The bottom line for many when it comes to being authentic is that we’re scared. We don’t want to deal with what we’ve imagined to be the consequences of authenticity- people’s judgements or reactions, our own fears and doubts, possible failure or rejection, the list goes on. The more we can get in touch with our own personal difficulties with being authentic, the more able and willing we’ll be to move past whatever is stopping us from being real. Live a meaningful, fulfilling life, face your fear, speak your truth and be fully authentic!
