Authority figures like Joe Namath are positioned to protect participants and should engage independent safeguarding programs to monitor minors' experiences. Lasso Safe's program offers a safeguarding recognition tool and asks sports participants to rate statements like these:
There are always at least two adults with the minors. No minor is isolated with an adult.
On my team I learn about boundaries. I feel safe to say no or find another adult to help me when I feel uncomfortable or scared.
Sometimes I see questionable behavior and I don’t feel comfortable reporting it; some reasons may be that I don’t know how, I don’t think it will make a difference or I fear identification and retaliation.

Man says Joe Namath ignored s*x abuse at football camp in 1970s
Philip Lyle Smith, now in his 60s and living in Florida, sued the Jets legend in 2019, detailing years of abuse from a counselor at a summer football camp Namath owned and ran for decades.

Lasso Safe believes that trauma-informed monitoring of athlete experiences can recognize the spectrum of well to abusive sports environments. How many incidents could have been prevented if NMSU athlete-students regularly rated these statements?
WELL
My team culture informs me on and respects personal boundaries. If I report a boundary violation, I can remain anonymous, and I know my personal information is protected.
I know there is no tolerance for inappropriate behavior on my team and I can report it. This includes treatment such as public humiliation, threats, intimidation and unwanted touch.
CONCERN
Sometimes I see questionable behavior and I don’t feel comfortable reporting it; some reasons may be that I don’t know how, I don’t think it will make a difference or I fear identification and retaliation.
I feel dependent on my team’s authority figures and put their approval before my own.
ABUSE
My team’s authority figures often use their power through pressures and demands to control me or my teammates; or they let my teammates treat each other this way. This can happen in person or online. I don’t feel comfortable speaking up.

Lawsuit: Guns a common sight within NMSU team
Two former New Mexico State players and a student manager filed a lawsuit Monday saying their teammates frequently brought guns into the locker room where they s*xually assaulted players as a way of ensuring everyone on the team remained "humble."
