Player development & skills training

10/27/2021

In this video, we have 5th grader, Reece Hemmett, working on his dribbling and basketball control in order to develop his handling in game situations. This is part of our warm up and it's a great drill any player can do at home, outside, or anywhere in order to work on becoming a better dribbler. The misconception about working on your game is that you need an indoor court and someone telling you what to do, but the reality is that you will never truly get better until you put in the work when no one is around. Give this drill a try if you are looking to take your game to the next level!

The truth that most people WON'T tell you when they want to become better at anything: it's the simple things done over and over and over again. It's not any incredible tricks in the training but rather drills like the one of our clients is performing right here. Jeremiah Isaac, 7th grader at First Baptist, is working on handling the ball while having to step through the cones at the same time. In any game, there will be a lot of decision's that you will have to make in a split second and having the ability to control the ball without thinking only allows you to make those decisions quicker.

Little hooper alert! Here we have Reece Hemmett, a newcomer here to the area, going through the diamond dribbling drill. In this drill he's working on multiple things: staying low, changing pace, and maintaining complete control as he changes direction with the ball. For guards and any players looking to get better, having the ability to handle the ball is crucial in developing your skills and taking your game to the next level!

Here we have one of our hoopers, Luke, point guard, and attending Gulfview Middle School. Luke is using the cones to mimic defenders as he works on developing his ability to handle the basketball. Luke is dribbling two basketballs and this helps him to work on both hands simultaneously, which will maximize basketball training time and force him to work on his weaker hand. Once he is past the cones, the pass to Coach Clark focuses on his ability to control his dribble while still dribbling with his right hand. From there, he continues with a dribble pull up and catch and shoot to replicate two live game movements and scenarios. Each phase of this drill correlates to an in game action and challengers the player to adapt to the speed at which things change in an actual basketball game.

Here we have one of our hoopers, Luke, point guard, and attending Gulfview Middle School. Resistance bands are helping Luke to improve his explosiveness on the court and develop better agility, as well as a higher vertical jump. Bands are perfect for strengthening your legs for movement in basketball or for building your arm power for shooting and passing. In this drill specifically, Luke is working on his explosiveness while still being able to handle the ball dribbling up the court.

Gateway Charter Varsity Boys Basketball team got some good work in. When it comes to working with our teams, we like to incorporate all aspects of the game fundamentally. Shooting, dribbling, passing, and footwork.

Rocco breaks down an in and out dribbling drill, which works on his control, footwork, and balance while being able to get by his defender! A very simple and fundamental drill! It's all about the basics!

Word of the day: Repetition

This clip features Abraham Makumator, current Division II hooper at Dallas Baptist University. The drill Coach Clark is taking him through works his conditioning, footwork, and his ability to catch the ball in a tight spot and finish at the rim. Its a simple drill, but very effective, and can be used by players of all skill sets to work on their game.
