First morning of our 2026 Canada trip. 🇨🇦🦆

Layout blinds in the stubble. Ducks over the spread. A spinner adjustment to get them centered—and my first drake wigeon.

This is why we make the drive north.

Swipe through a few moments from the hunt, from the field setup to the meal back at camp. When the rain moved in, we picked up before risking damage to the farmer’s field. A good first morning, with more scouting and more hunts ahead.

NEW EPISODE 130: FOR BETTER OR WORSE… I MARRIED A DUCK HUNTER!

This week on The Migration Waterfowl Podcast, I’ve got a very special guest joining me — my wife, Karen!

We’ve been together for 32 years, married for 28, and through it all, she’s had a front-row seat to the madness that comes with being married to a hardcore hunter.

The early mornings, long hunting trips, countless hours in the marsh, questionable purchases, and the ups and downs of building a side hustle in the outdoor industry. She’s seen it all!

The funny thing? She’s never had any interest in hunting herself!

In this episode, we turn the tables and hear HER side of the story. We talk about marriage, raising our two daughters, the sacrifices that come with the hunting lifestyle, and what it’s really like supporting someone whose passion sometimes borders on obsession.

There are some laughs, a little reflection, and a perspective we don’t hear nearly enough in the hunting community.

WILD TABLE WEDNESDAY: FIVE-SPICE GOOSE SKEWERS

If your wild goose keeps turning out tough, change the cut and shorten the cook.

This MeatEater recipe slices the breast into thin ribbons across the grain, marinates them in orange, soy and Chinese five-spice, then flash-sears the skewers over high heat. The thin strips take on plenty of flavor and cook in less than five minutes while staying pink and tender in the middle.

Finish them with grilled orange and green onion. Serve with rice and broccoli—or put the platter in the middle of the table and let everyone grab a skewer.

WILD TABLE WEDNESDAY: CHIPOTLE-APRICOT DUCK

Sweet apricot, smoky chipotle and properly cooked wild duck—this one earned its place at the table.

The recipe took first place in a Ducks Unlimited contest that drew nearly 1,500 submissions. After five rounds of judging, it came out on top for taste, creativity, accessible ingredients and real-world usability.

The difference starts with the brine. Give the duck at least six hours—preferably overnight—then pat it dry and cook it hot and fast. Brush on the chipotle-apricot glaze only near the end so it caramelizes without burning. Rest, slice and serve it with wild rice.
