At 22 years old, Bobby Clampett looked like the future of golf.
He had already been named National College Player of the Year twice, and at the 1982 U.S. Open, only two men finished ahead of him:
Tom Watson.
Jack Nicklaus.
That’s the company he was keeping.
At that time, being that good that young was almost unheard of.
The golf world believed he would be the next dominant force in the sport.
Clampett believed it too.
He later reflected that he felt like he was on the road to greatness — fully expecting to win major championships.

In 1982, Bobby Clampett arrived at The Open Championship at Troon just weeks after nearly winning the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.
He had never even played golf in Scotland before.
But the moment he stepped onto the course, something clicked.
Clampett remembers teeing off the first hole with bagpipes playing and flags from around the world flying above the crowd.
The energy was electric… and his confidence was high.
He opened the tournament with a 67, taking an early lead.
The next day he followed it with a 66 after sticking a 6-iron close on the 18th and making birdie.
Suddenly the rookie had something no one expected:
A massive lead at The Open Championship.
At one point, Clampett stood on the 6th tee with a 7-shot lead over the field.
For a young player who felt like he was on the road to greatness, it looked like the moment everything was about to change.
Golf history is full of moments like this — where confidence, pressure, and opportunity collide on the biggest stage.
Sometimes those moments launch careers.
Sometimes they become lessons that shape everything that comes after.

Proud to have helped start a Pro-Am that’s become the lifeblood of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County.
Every year, the Monday of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, we tee it up at Monterey Peninsula Country Club with one goal: make a real impact for kids in our community.
To date, this event has helped raise over $8 million, funding programs, mentorship, and opportunity for the next generation.
Honored to have Ron Rivera and Marcus Walden join the panel this year, two great leaders with deep ties to Monterey.
