And, check out this 1983 article. It's the earliest documentation we have about CCWTA's original organizational meetings. Back then, it was called the “Connie Tennis Outing," honoring Connie Kormanyos, the former Collier County Parks & Rec tennis instructor who helped form CCWTA. Members gathered for a full morning of tennis, followed by a business meeting, election of officers, lunch, and fashion show. Sound familiar!?

Today, more than 40 years later, we call this our CCWTA Annual Meeting. Can you believe the only thing that has changed about it is the name? The tennis, luncheon, election of officers, and even the ever-popular fashion show remain the same.

We hope you’ll join us as we carry on a CCWTA tradition that has been bringing women together through tennis for decades. 🎾

Our trip through CCWTA history continues!

Today let's travel back to the years of 1980-1984. Our league was just getting off the ground, and our ladies could be found competing on courts all over Collier County, including Seagate Elementary School, Naples High School, Naples YMCA, Victoria Park, Bay Forest, Naples Park, Cambier Park, Barron Collier High School, Lely YMCA, Naples Bath and Tennis, World Tennis Center, Glades Country Club, Port of Island Resort, and Bay Forest.

Interestingly, the NTRP ratings were rolled out in 1978, but CCWTA hadn't quite caught on to using them just yet. Instead, our levels were classified into B, C, and D groups and subgroups.

Different classifications, different rackets, and definitely different tennis fashion - but the same competition, camaraderie, and love for the game of tennis!

🎾 CCWTA: A Look Back Through the Years! 🎾
Every great organization has a story — and ours is captured in decades of photos, memories, friendships, matches and milestones. ❤️

Each week this Fall, we’ll be opening up the Collier County Women’s Tennis Association historical scrapbooks and sharing a little piece of our history — from the women who helped get it all started to the teams, tournaments and traditions that have made CCWTA what it is today.

Follow along as we celebrate where we started, how far we’ve come, and all the women who have been part of the journey. We promise that some of the hairstyles and tennis outfits will not fail to entertain!

It all started with a lady named Connie Kormanyos. In January of 1978, she stepped into the role of tennis instructor for the Collier County Parks and Rec Department. She began giving lessons and organizing league play for women. And the women loved her.

By 1980, Connie had a wide following. She had coached over 1,000 players and was organizing weekly "low-key, yet competitive" tennis for over 250 women in the Collier County area. When she announced that she would be relocating to St. Louis with her husband, her students honored her with a farewell luncheon, which over 160 women attended. The token of appreciation they presented her with as a goodbye? A hand-embroidered pillow in the shape of a tennis racket, which was autographed by all the girls at the luncheon.

In the 2 years that Connie had been teaching in Collier County, she'd created the beginning of what would become CCWTA. Upon her departure, a few of her players stepped up and formed CCWTA as an official organization that would oversee the continued operation of the area tennis leagues that Connie had formed through Collier County Parks and Rec.

Thanks to Connie Kormanyos, Collier County Women Tennis players are still benefiting today!!
