Gov. Bill Lee Honors Ronald Christopher Garland with Certificate of Appreciation
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - On August 1, 2025, Governor Bill Lee awarded a Certificate of Appreciation "in outstanding service in the best interest and in the highest traditions of the state of Tennessee" to Ronald Christopher Garland, recognizing his lifelong commitment to service, mentorship, and community leadership.
Mr. Garland, a veteran with both military and paramilitary experience, is also a Hapkido Grand Master with multiple martial arts victories and international recognition. Beyond his personal achievements, Garland has devoted much of his life to mentoring young people, with a special focus on neurodivergent youth and other students who benefit from the discipline, structure, and confidence martial arts training provides.
His work at Executive Martial Arts has impacted countless young people. Students describe him as both a teacher and a role model, blending self-defense with lessons in humility, respect, and resilience. One 2025 summer intern reflected:
"On the first day of training at Executive Martial Arts, I had the opportunity to meet a legendary figure in the discipline Chris Garland, also known as Mr. Chris. He welcomed us with a strong sense of purpose and guided us through the foundational principles of self-defense. This marked the beginning of our journey into the discipline and mindset of a true martial arts practitioner."
Another student noted:
"I really enjoyed the self-defense classes. This was a very good interactive experience for me to connect with my peers. I feel more prepared for college and life in general with those skills."
To celebrate this recognition, a community reception will be held soon at Executive Martial Arts, Charlotte Pike, Nashville, TN. The event will include light refreshments and brief remarks from Mr. Garland.
Mr. Garland shared his gratitude: "This honor is not mine alone but belongs to the young people who continue to inspire me every day. Working alongside them, watching them grow, and seeing their potential is the true reward."
The public is invited to join in celebrating Mr. Garland's service, achievements, and enduring impact on Tennessee's youth.
