Here’s a little low/drop ball framing coaching tip to our catchers from my time working with Jen Schro Catching on their Summer Tour.

Jen Schroeder — umm, so are you ready to hit the road again or what? 🥳

Who has had a hard time framing drop balls? Maybe jamming your thumb along the way?

This progression drill will help you understand the glove movement needed to frame drop balls effectively.

Key Takeaways:
⚡️Hand/glove stays low and underneath the ball (pocket of glove should be below palm)
⚡️As the ball drops, your glove stays low, swiping the ground
⚡️As you receive the ball, the only movement should be moving up through the ball.
⚡️If your glove has a movement going back down toward the ground to catch the ball (glove kick as I call it), you are moving too soon.

Ever feel like you are throwing over the runner on a bunt down the first base line?

The runner has 30 ft (half way down the line) to move into foul territory — if a thrown ball hits her within those 30 ft, it is a live ball — which means we have to work around the runner in the short amount of time.

How do we do that? A simple step back footwork as we move into our throw.

Here we are working through three stages of progression:
1. Stationary — simply working footwork with the visualization of cones
2. Full rep from squat — working to put bunt mechanics + the step back footwork together
3. Game reps

Sometimes girls need you to be hard. Sometime they need you to be encouraging. Sometimes they need you to hold them accountable. Sometimes they need you to push them further. Sometimes they need you to listen. And sometimes they simply just need you to see them and meet them where they’re at. 💛

DIA athlete, Zoie Butler, commits to the University of Illinois.

What a fun one this is! Zoie walked into my doors shortly after not making the team her first year of middle school softball. I could tell she wanted it and was ready to prove to people she could play in the years to come…and she did just that! She went on to become a middle school state champion, an important part to her high school team and now a Power 4 commit. Zo continued to show up for herself, knowing the goals she dreamt of achieving. If anything she taught herself and those around her, that even when something doesn’t go your way, you put your head down and fight harder for what you want.

I am so incredible proud of you Zoie Butler and am so excited to see where this new chapter takes you!!

Go Fighting Illini! 🧡💙

DIA athlete, Jayla Page, commits to Evansville University!

What a true joy it’s been getting to watch you grow into who you are as an athlete and even better human! There was a time early on in training where you became defeated in lessons because you weren’t quite understanding the skill. We worked through it together and from that moment you switch gears. You dug deeper, you challenged yourself, you pushed through finding confidence and grew a new love for the game. All of these things are what is going to help you not only perform, but excel at the next level!

Evansville Softball is so lucky to have you and I can’t to see the impact you leave!

GO ACES! 💜🧡

As promised, I’ve been training for a half marathon to practice what I preach in pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone, doing hard things, and honestly things you may not want to do.
