I’m not sure I could’ve asked for a better last tournament as a head coach. I didn’t know what to expect when I first started this coaching journey but I had a few things I wanted to accomplish. To teach the game, let the players have fun and and challenge them to get better by playing good teams and to spend time with Taryn playing the game she loves.
This tournament was a culmination of all that. And these 9 young ladies put a nice bow on the season as well as the last 4 years. A lot was asked of them over the week and they definitely stepped up to task! These 9, all first year 14u players, played through heat and humidity, injuries and no in game breaks to go 6-2-1 (4 of those played on elimination day back to back to back to back) for the week resulting in a 2nd place finish to a tough Ohio Thunder team. Although it looked like they were tired and worn down, they never complained and just continued to play hard and with class and determination. It was really fun and amazing to watch and be a part of. Thank you ladies, it’s been a fun ride!
Thank you to all of the parents, friends and family that have been supportive and helpful over the years. Especially to my wife, Deanna, who has been through it all with me. It hasn’t always been easy but I appreciate all of your input and support. Thanks to my assistant coaches, Matt, Corey and Dave (when you’re not coaching your own teams). I couldn’t have been as successful without all your help. To Christina Rice Contreras, you’ve been our team mom for this journey and have helped me and the girls out in so many ways. Thank you so much for all you’ve done! I truly appreciate everything!
Thank you Chaos Softball for allowing me to be a part of your organization and trusting me to help over the years.
If I said I wasn’t a little upset about taking a step back I’d be lying. The dugout is one interesting place and I’ve really enjoyed my time with the players. But I am looking forward to being a spectator and a fan again. Time goes by way too fast and I’m excited to take it all in.
If I could give one piece of advice it would be this: Don’t sweat all the small stuff and just enjoy watching your child play. Enjoy the competition of the game and the adversity it forces them to go through. Guide your players through the tough times and help them become capable of dealing with it themselves because if you spend your time arguing or complaining to or about the coaches you’ll miss the enjoyment that the games provides and you won’t get that time back.
It’s been a pleasure,
Coach Chris
