Elvis recorded a cover of Chuck Berry's "Memphis, Tennessee" in May 1963, and it was good enough that RCA considered releasing it as a single. Then Lonnie Mack's instrumental version of the exact same song started climbing the charts that same year, and Elvis's take got shelved to avoid competing with it. His recording sat unreleased for roughly three decades, finally surfacing on a collector's rarities compilation in the 1990s. Chuck Berry's original has racked up cover versions from the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Animals, but Elvis's own take almost never saw daylight. 🎙️
