Interesting reading about marriage and divorce-

Sunday 2.16 mock-up Good morning! It's Sunday, Feb. 16, and welcome to 1440’s Sunday Topics newsletter. On this Valentine's Day weekend, we're exploring the ancient origins and modern iterations of marriage—plus, we're diving into ancient Roman tariffs, puzzling over the moon's gunpowder-y smell, and more.

Another post for National Mediation Month!

Mediation is one of the most cost-effective divorce processes, making it a popular choice. In fact, many states require a couple dissolving a marriage to attempt mediation.

To get the most out of mediation, it's so important that individuals are aware of the roles lawyers, mediators, and divorce coaches play in the process.

October is National Mediation Month! Because the vast majority of divorce and co-parenting agreements are mediated agreements, I'd like to use the month of October to share some important information about the process.

For most individuals going through divorce and co-parenting struggles, the words that come to mind when thinking about mediation might be "fear," "justice," vindication," "grief," "anger," or "unfair."

As a DCA® Certified ADR Divorce Coach, the word that most commonly comes to my mind when I think about mediation is "OPPORTUNITY!" If we can prepare for mediation by learning about what it is and what is isn't, by digging into our underlying needs, interests, and goals, and by learning how to negotiate effectively , we have a great opportunity to create a path forward that works for everyone. As a bonus, mediated agreements (done right) lead to a higher likelihood of each party remaining committed to the agreement, both in spirit and in deed.

If you are in the process of divorce or developing a parenting plan, feel free to reach out to learn more about taking hold of the opportunities available in mediation.

Hi Everyone! I'm back this week with Jennifer Doyle Vancil, a Strengths Based Career Coach, serving clients navigating career changes!

I'm so impressed by the hope that Jennifer's work inspires during what is otherwise a pretty difficult time. By helping clients identify their strengths, effectively communicate about their strengths, and translate those strengths into conversations, interviews, resumes, cover letters, biographies, and LinkedIn profiles, clients have increased hope for their futures and more opportunities to embrace change and make it work for the better in their lives.

I hope you enjoy this short introduction to Jennifer and the work she does. As always, if you or someone you care about is going through the divorce process, feel free to reach out. It’s certainly possible to get divorced the old fashioned, expensive way, but why would you when there are less destructive options. There is specialized and affordable help available if you know where to look.

Best wishes!

I'm so thankful and excited that I get to do the kind of work that would have an American Bar Association magazine coming to my mailbox! I can remember even as a teen, trying to help people see each other's point of view so they could understand, rather than getting angry or avoidant. Who knew it would turn into a profession?!

I’m back again this week to introduce Eric Berner! Eric is a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA) in the Nashville, Tennessee area. I’m so thankful for Eric’s willingness to participate in this series, and so excited for you to hear about his role as a divorce professional.

Money fear…breath in, breath out, repeat! It’s one of the BIG issues in divorce. Why? Because fear of not having enough money threatens our most basic needs… our physiological needs. Additionally, in our society, money is an essential part of meeting our higher needs as well.

Thankfully, we have professionals like Eric who specialize in helping clients going through divorce handle their money fears so they can make good decisions in their divorce process, and decisions that are good for their future.

I hope you enjoy this short introduction to Eric Berner. As always, if you or someone you care about is going through the divorce process, feel free to reach out. I’m back this week to introduce you to another divorce professional, Maci Chance! Maci is a Certified Divorce Specialist and Denver Realtor. She helps families going through one of the hardest parts of divorce…selling the family home.

We all know a home is more than the structure and property. The home holds memories, represents security and community, and is often really hard to give up. In reality, keeping the home is often not an option in divorce. This is where Maci steps in to help. With warmth, compassion, and experience, she expertly manages the process of selling the home while also managing the special considerations that exist due to the family’s changing needs during divorce.

I hope you enjoy this short introduction to Maci Chance. As always, if you or someone you care about is going through the divorce process, feel free to reach out. It’s certainly possible to get divorced the old fashioned, expensive way, but why would you when there are less destructive options. The next few weeks will be all about introducing you to the many divorce professionals who support clients during the most trying of times. When we find ourselves facing a scary, unknown future , most of us will immediately turn to an attorney for support. And attorneys are necessary in some divorces. But there are many types of divorce professionals who are particularly trained to help with the aspects of divorce that do not require legal assistance. For instance, did you know there's a divorce professional who is particularly trained to help families going through divorce make pet related decisions? So rather than turning what happens with Fido into a legal battle, we can calmly work toward an agreement that is best for Fido and the whole family.

As a divorce coach, I help clients find the right divorce professional for the particular challenges they are facing so they can effectively manage conflict in divorce and tame the tension and costs associated with the process. The series starts tomorrow, and I hope you enjoy the video introductions!

Victor Frankl knew more about injustice than any human should know. Through his writings, we inherit the benefit of the lessons he gained through his experience of suffering; specific to this post, the link between human freedom and attitude.

For most people going through divorce, there is much suffering, and often injustice. One by one, the losses accrue, overwhelm, and threaten to reduce us to our basest instincts. Just as in Frankl's quote, there is one thing that we have complete control over... our attitude. Choosing our attitude toward suffering is what allows us to move through the process of divorce with dignity.

If you need help exercising the human freedom of choosing your attitude while going through divorce, please reach out. Reach out to me, or to someone else who has the experience to help, but get the help you need so you can leave a heritage of dignity in suffering for those who are learning from you.
