Home gym tour part 6: cardio!

05/18/2026

I looked in the mirror and didn’t recognize who I saw.

Trying my best, but feeling like I was failing at everything.

Too checked out to notice when my wife needed me.

Strong and in-shape, but also beat up and just slogging through every workout.

Too exhausted from work to put any effort into my home life.

Chores piling up. Unpaid bills. “Crash and burn” as the norm.

Maybe you can relate.

I’ve said it before, but I don’t believe in “balance.”

Work/life balance isn’t a thing. You have a life. That’s it. What you do with it is up to you.

When one activity starts opposing the others, balance isn’t the solution. Taking stock of the whole is.

With deeper purpose, everything fits together.

Without deeper purpose, things appear to oppose each other and we try to “balance” the scales. In my experience, this rarely works. We can’t live aimlessly, or against our deeper values, for long. Or at least I can’t.

When I’ve come to those low points in my life, I don’t take it as a signal that I’m a bad person, or truly failing.

I’m no detective, but I’d say it’s a clue. A clue that whatever I’m doing is out of alignment with my deeper values.

Clarify those, then set some action steps to bring things into alignment, problem solved.

When I bring myself back into alignment through some simple action steps, work is no longer a chore. I sleep better. I have better conversations with my wife. I’m less reactive and more patient. And training is fun again.

That’s why one of the first things I do with nearly all clients is take stock of their deeper values.

Why do they want to achieve this goal?

How will that enhance the things they care most about?

If training is already a top 3 priority in their life, why? What’s the payoff for them? (hint: it’s ALWAYS deeper than “lose weight” or “run my first marathon”)

If you’ve never done clarified your deeper values, let me encourage you to sit down today and spend 5 minutes reflecting.

You may be surprised what you uncover. And you also may be surprised how much it can impact your daily quality of life, relationships, productivity, and motivation to train.

When you were a kid, did you really care how much money your dad made?

Hard work and sacrifices are part of the deal.

I just remind myself every day not to sacrifice things I can’t get back.

It’s impossible to sum up my feelings toward this woman in a post. Neither of us really do sappy posts either.

But I have no idea where I’d be in life without her.

We’ve grown up together. We’re drastically different people than when we got married in 2012, and yet the most important things are still the same.

I read somewhere that you don’t fall in love with a human “being,” you fall in love with a human “becoming.”

And I thank God every day I get to see who she’s becoming.
