My Las Vegas Experience - World Series of Board Games Strat-O-Matic Championship

On Saturday morning, I was assigned to a group with 6 other contestants. We had a draft in which we each selected two Diamon Gems teams. I selected the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers and the 1922 St. Louis Browns, and created a 20-man roster from those two teams.

In Round 1, we played a 2-game series against each of the other 6 contestants in our group. The competition was tough!

On Saturday, my first opponent was Ted Demetrio of Olympia, Washington. His roster came from the 1927 Yankees and the 1924 Washington Senators. He won both games, by scores of 2-1 and 12-4. The first game was a heartbreaker; the second game was a blowout.

Next I played Kim Codoley of Burlington, North Carolina. His roster came from the 1921 Yankees and the 2009 Yankees. He won both games, by scores of 4-3 and 8-1. I was now 0-4 and it was not looking good.

For my third series, my opponent was Shannon Harrison of Fate, Texas. His roster came from the 1950 Yankees and the 1970 Twins. He won the first game 7-0, and my record was now a dismal 0-5. But in our second game, I finally had a victory, prevailing 11-9 in 11 innings. I had an 8-2 lead headed to the bottom of the 8th inning, but Shannon's team scored 6 runs to tie it up. I scored 3 runs in the top of the 11th; the key hit was a 2-out bases-loaded double by Ken Williams that scored 2 runs. My record was now 1-5.

John Hagmaier of New York City was my next opponent; his team was a combination of the 2002 Giants and the 1927 Pirates. I won the first game 11-0. I scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning without even one batter being retired, and a grand slam by P*e Wee Reese put me up 11-0. At the point, as allowed by tournament rules, my opponent conceded. Clem Labine was the winning pitcher with a 4-hit 5-inning shutout. But John won our second game by a score of 7-2, and I ended the day with a record of 2-6.

On Saturday night, I knew that I would have to win all 4 of my remaining games to finish Round 1 with a record of 6-6. That probably wouldn't be enough to advance to Round 2, but maybe there was a very slim chance I could advance via tiebreakers vs others who would also end up 6-6.

On Sunday morning, my hopes were immediately dashed. My first opponent was Tom Antonucci of Los Angeles. His team was a combo of the 1929 Cubs and the 1920 Cleveland Indians. We split the series; he won the first game 9-8, and I won the second game 7-1. My record was now 3-7 with 2 games remaining.

My final opponent was Tim Nersinger of Spokane, Washington. His team was a blend of the 1975 Reds and the 1972 Oakland Athletics. He won the first game 7-2, and I won the second game 6-4. A 3-run homer by Roy Campanella was the highlight of my victory, which was my final game of the tournament. I ended up with a record of 4 wins, 8 losses. Oh well! Wait until next year!

During the tournament, I met up with Pete Nelson of Maple Valley, Washington. He and I first met in the late 1980s when I lived in Seattle, and it is always good to re-connect with old friends.

I will be participating in some consolation games. And the hotel is great (Horseshoe Las Vegas) and there is plenty of good food here. My 75th birthday is Wednesday, and my flight home is Thursday morning.

But this time, they held on to their early lead. Cole Ragans, the Kansas City starter, retired only 1 batter, striking out leadoff batter Juan Soto. But he then gave up back-to-back singles to Jose Ramirez and Willson Contreras, followed by a 3-run homer by Bryan Reynolds, and then back-to-back double by Taylor Ward and Ezquiel Tovar. The Blue Sox now led 4-0, and that was the end of the day for Ragans, who would be followed by 6 relievers. The Blue Sox added another 5 runs in the 2nd inning to take a 9-0 lead. Blue Sox starter Andre Pallante got the win; he went 7 innings and gave up just 2 runs (solo homers by Bobby Witt in the 3rd and 7th innings). In the top of the 2nd, Kansas City rightfielder Randal Grichuk's rbi double cut the Blue Sox lead to 5-1. In the bottom of the 4th, Jose Ramirez homered off Lucas Erceg to make it 6-1 Blue Sox. But in the top of the 5th, Kikuchi gave up a 2-run homer to Vinnie Pasquantino, bringing Kansas City to within 6-3. And in the top of the 6th, Kansas City made it a 1-run game as Bobby Witt knocked Kikuchi out of the game with an rbi single, and Jonathan India greeted Blue Sox reliever Brenan Hanifee with a run-scoring single of his own.

In the top of the 9th, however, the Blue Sox still had a 6-5 lead and manager Dave Bristol called upon Mason Miller to go for the save. Miller has been having a terrible season, and today was no exception. Maikel Garcia led off with a double, Pasquantino drew a walk, and Salvador Perez singled to load the bases with nobody out. Next Michael Massey also singled, scoring Garcia to tie the game. The bases were still loaded and there was still nobody out. Adam Frazier lined out to short, but Tyler Tolbert followed with a successful squeeze play that scored Pasquantino with the lead run. Miller got Drew Waters to fly out to left to end the inning, but the damage was done.

Kansas City now led 7-6 headed to the bottom of the 9th with a fatigued Bailey Falter, who had entered the game in the 7th, on the mound. Willson Contreras lined out to short, but the next 2 batters - Bryan Reynolds and Ward - each drew a walk, giving the Blue Sox the potential tying run on second and the potential lead run on first. Carlos Estevez took over for Falter, getting pinch-hitter Carlos Santana to to pop out to second and getting pinch-hitter Keibert Ruiz to foul out. Falter got the win, Miller got the loss, and Estevez got the save. For Kansas City, Perez was 3-for-5 and Grichuk was 3-for-4. For the Blue Sox, Ward was 4-for-4 with 3 doubles and a walk.

He still has struck out 33 batters and held them to a batting average of .205 and OPS of .615, but he has had only 8 save opportunities, with 5 saves and 3 blown saves. Yes, a single 66-game season is a small sample size, but that offers no solace to the fans of the Blue Sox.

In the 5th inning, Juan Soto led off with a homer off Peralta to put the Blue Sox up 3-2. In the top of the 7th, Brenan Hanifee took over in relief of Kikuchi, and Chourio greeted him with a double. After Hanifee got Vaughn to fly out, with pinch-hitter Christian Yelich at the plate, Chourio stole thirdbase. Yelich drew a walk, and (after Hanifee struck out Rhys Hoskins for the second out of the inning), a passed ball charged against Blue Sox catcher Freddy Fermin allowed Chourio to score the tying run. In the bottom of the 1st, Milwaukee starter Jose Quintana lasted just 1/3 of an inning, as Bryan Reynolds (who had the walkoff hit in yesterday's game) continued his heroics with a 3-run homer. Quintana was out of the game and would be followed by 8 Milwaukee relievers! In the top of the 2nd, Milwaukee sent 11 men to the plate, scoring 5 runs, taking a 6-3 lead, and Woods-Richardson exited the game after just 1.2 innings (he would be followed by 5 Blue Sox relievers). Kerry Carpenter homered in the bottom of the 2nd off Rob Zastryzny to cut Milwaukee's lead to 6-4, and then homered in the bottom of the 4th off D.L. Hall to cut Milwaukee's lead to 6-5, and then hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 6th off Trevor Megill to put the Blue sox up 7-6.

Carpenter became the fourth Blue Sox player to hit 3 homeruns in a game; the others were Jedd Gyorko against the Dodgers in 2018, Logan Morrison against the Tigers in 2018, and Brandon Nimmo against the Yankees in 2021.

Starting the top of the 9th, Blue Sox reliever Mason Miller (who had entered the game in the 7th) gave up a walk to Sal Frelick. With Miller fatigued, Edwin Uceta took over on the hill for the Blue Sox, and Brice Turang's sacrifice bunt moved Frelick to second. Next, pinch-hitter Jake Bauers struck out and Milwaukee was down to their last out. Christian Yelich drew a walk, and with Uceta fatigued, Tyler Ferguson came in to pitch. Jackson Chourio hit an infield single, and a wild throw by Blue Sox secondbaseman Luis Rengifo allowed Frelick to score the tying run, with Yelich advancing to third and Chourio winding up on second. Next, Caleb Durbin singled, with Yelich scoring the lead run. In the bottom of the 9th, Chad Patrick (still tired from yesterday's 5.1 inning stint) was on the mound; he was the 7th Milwaukee reliever of the game. He got Rengifo to ground out, but then he walked Juan Soto and gave up a single to Jose Ramirez. With 1 out, Soto representing the tying run, Ramirez representing the winning run, and Willson Contreras coming to the plate, Milwaukee sent Shelby Miller in to close it out. Contreras smashed a liner that was caught by Milwaukee secondbaseman Brice Turang, who stepped on second to double up Soto and end the game. Patrick got the win, Uceta got the loss, and S. Miller got the save.

For Milwaukee, Frelick was 3-for-4 with 3 stolen bases, Yelich was 3-for-4 with a stolen base, and Durbin was 3-for-5 with a stolen base. For the Blue Sox, Ramirez was 3-for-4.
