Meet Azara 🐴

Azara is a beautiful example of what we love about the Foundation Quarter Horse.

She’s 100% Foundation, a silver grulla, and stands a big 15.3 hands. She’s also sweet as pie, with a kind personality that makes her pretty special around here. 🥰

But let’s talk about that gorgeous color…

Have you ever wondered why grullas have those distinctive dun stripes?

Grulla is a black-based coat color modified by the dun gene. The dun gene dilutes the black base color, creating that beautiful gray/mouse-colored body while leaving the primitive markings — including the dorsal stripe and leg barring — visible.

Azara is homozygous black-based (E/E), which means she carries two copies of the black-base allele. Add the dun gene, and you get that gorgeous grulla coloring. 🖤🐴

And yes, she’s a mare — so grulla is the term we use for her color. 😉
