Why Kids Should Learn Jiu-Jitsu (Even If They Aren't Getting Bullied) Parents often sign their kids up for Brazilian jiu-jitsu because of bullying problems at school, and while this is certainly a great reason to get your children to start BJJ, there are many other ways this martial art can benefit kids of all ages. Making changes for the better, making changes for lives!

BJJ Training expanded! Details here:

Remember when we told you all new officers would be required to attend weekly Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) training before they work solo? MPD has now opened this training opportunity up to our EXISTING officers as well! Once again, we are the only department we know of with this program...where the officers having the opportunity to attend several training classes a week, the classes will be paid for by the department and the students will receive training credit for the time they are in class.

"WHY DO THIS" you might ask?
Simple: These skills increase the officers ability to handle a rough or sensitive situation only using their control techniques. The truth is that if we must arrest someone, and they do not comply, the result can look ugly while we both struggle against each other. These situations are typically where an officer is seen on video using a taser, pepper spray or some other tool. While we still carry those tools, our goal is to reduce their use when possible.

MPD Senior Command Staff lobbied for this new training opportunity as it has been proven to reduce injuries to all parties involved in the confrontation. Some officers were paying for their own training. In addition, some of the new hires also paid their own way once they achieved solo status and the mandatory portion of the training ended.

This new four month trial program begins July 1st. Existing officers can sign up to receive BJJ training up to (3) times/classes each week. The only stipulation is that participating officers MUST commit to attending at least (3) classes per month.

KUDOS MPD command for taking additional steps to increase everyone's safety and training!
