Lone Star Pole Vault Newsletter 8-20-24

Welcome to the "off season" and back to school training. While summer may not technically be over and Fall hasn't officially started yet, Lone Star is already looking ahead and training for the 2025 season. We hope everyone had a great summer, got a chance to watch the Olympics, and are looking forward to the upcoming track season as much as we are.

Coaching Updates

Welcome Coach Joy Sherwood - Joy is a junior at the University of Texas and has been training at Lone Star since 2017. With an extensive background in gymnastics, Joy excelled in the pole vault in high school for Great Hearts Monte Vista School in San Antonio graduating in 2022 with a gold and bronze medal at the UIL 3A State Championships and a personal record of 13'3". While still in high school, Joy served as an unofficial "Coach's Assistant" at practice here at Lone Star where she would break out the younger or less experienced pole vaulters and work one-on-one with them on skill development during busy group sessions. Joy has always stood out as a student-of-the-event among her peers, researching technique, asking questions, attending seminars, and dedicating herself to refining technique. Her knowledge-base, attention to detail, enthusiasm, ability to demonstrate proficiently, and great communication skills made her an ideal candidate to add to our coaching team here at Lone Star. She has been shadowing and co-coaching with myself for the past 3 weeks and I have supervised and observed her teaching both private lessons and groups. I can confidently state that I would not hesitate to put any of my own 4 children in a private or group lesson with Joy as I know they would be in great hands, coached safely, taught properly, and would have fun. Joy is currently offering 3 group sessions a week at 5:30 on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays as well as private lesson slots before and after those groups. She will also be covering a few Sundays for Coach Henderson. Get scheduled for lessons with Joy and see for yourself!

Farewell to Coach Logan Fraley - Logan has recently moved to St. Louis, Missouri to attend seminary school. He will likely continue to coach pole vaulting there at a school and possibly a club. We truly enjoyed having him here and wish him all the best!

See you later to Coach Will Anderson - Will is a full-time teacher at Chapa Middle School in Kyle, TX and coaches football in the Fall as well as being busy with numerous other school activities. He will return at the end of this Fall Semester to coach weekends at Lone Star and has even mentioned competing at the National Pole Vault Summit in Reno in January! We look forward to having him back!

Where is Calie? - Coach Calie Spencer is on a sabbatical until the middle of October when she will return to Lone Star. She has been traveling around Europe since the end of July having been in Portugal, France, and Morocco. Safe travels!

Coach Austin Davisson - Austin has been an integral part of everyday operations around Lone Star helping with everything from coaching to maintenance and repairs, fabrication, and cleanup. He will start school again next week but you will see him around the gym periodically training for his junior season at UIW.

Coach Kyle Henderson - Henderson continues to be "the Sunday coach" in addition to his duties as a retired contract employee with Comal ISD. As membership picks up we hope to see more of him around the gym.

Coach Kris Allison - Now starting my 24th year of owning and running Lone Star, I am currently coaching Monday and Wednesday evening groups as well as offering weekday private lessons Monday though Friday. As membership and demand increases, I will add on more sessions/days as needed. I continue to operate the athletic equipment sales and landing systems (pits) repair and fabrication businesses whenever I'm not coaching.
