💦 The hidden plumbing of the Edwards Aquifer:

🔹 The Springs Stagger Their Shutdowns: Comal Springs isn't just one single spout; it’s a system of seven major springs and dozens of smaller fissures. When aquifer levels drop, the higher-elevation "upper spring runs" (the ones you walk past on the park trails) are the first to stall out and go dry.

🔹 Deep-Water Fissures to the Rescue: While the shallow park springs have paused, the deeper, lower-elevation fissures at the bottom of Landa Lake are still pushing out tens of millions of gallons of water a day!

🔹 Low Flow, But Steady: The river's average historical flow is around 284 cubic feet per second (cfs), and while drought has dropped that down significantly to around 60–70 cfs, it is still enough to keep the main downstream channel consistently fed, refreshing, and supporting local wildlife.

Nature's subterranean plumbing is incredibly resilient! Have you been out to see the changes at the park yourself lately? Let's talk in the comments. 👇

Effective today, Thursday, May 28, 2026, at 10:00am, recreation access to the Comal River will be open.

Debris has been cleaned up by City staff and the water clarity is returning to normal. However, river-goers should still be cautious of debris that may not be visible under the water’s surface. The City of New Braunfels encourages the use of life vests while participating in any water-related activity.
