Just wanted to share something with you guys if you didn’t already know. I field approximately 60% of my calls either through text or by phone. When someone requests a snake removal, my number 1 goal is to kill the fear through identification and education. I am NOT doing this to make money off of anyone’s fear of snakes and while it may not be a great business model I would rather empower folks than take advantage of them and I feel like a lot of companies do just the opposite.
#1. If a pest control company says they can come to your home and spray or spread a deterrent of some sort that will keep snakes away, they’re either lying to you or truly don’t know that such thing doesn’t exist.
#2. If a removal company isn’t trying to identify the snake before responding, that’s because they’ll most likely charge you the same amount for a garter snake as they would a rattlesnake and not bat an eye, to me and most it’s just time and mileage, we don’t care what kind of snake it is when we get there.

Don’t use chatGPT or google to try and properly identify a snake, text me anytime. Here are some photos from a couple of recent calls that I ended up not having to respond to and both of which thought they were calling for me to come remove a venomous snake or they just didn’t know what to do about it and I was able to walk them through safely getting the snake to move along on their own.

She’s been catching rat snakes since she was about 3. Even this 6’+ Western Rat Snake can’t cause any more damage than a kitten can.

One unique thing about the is that when they strike their prey, unlike a rattlesnake, they will almost always remain clenched to the prey item until they begin to swallow.

Some garter snakes are bigger than others.
This was a big female black-necked garter snake found in Comal Co.

Just know if you’re calling me for a removal, you’re really calling my daughter to come get the snake. Don’t feel too bad though she’s pretty awesome.
