⭐️ Gold Star Behavior: Kids Yoga Teacher Edition

After teaching 5,000+ kids yoga classes, my definition of a “good” class has changed quite a bit.

I’m not looking for perfectly quiet kids, perfectly still bodies, or everyone doing exactly the same thing.

I’m looking for choice, connection, movement, regulation & belonging. 💓

Sometimes the child watching from the edge is participating. Sometimes the wiggles are exactly what their body needs. And sometimes abandoning the lesson you spent forever planning is the best teaching decision you make. 😂

Our goal isn’t to teach kids to be compliant. It’s to help them understand their bodies, notice what they need & build tools they can actually use beyond the mat.

⭐️ Teachers, what would YOU add to the Gold Star list?

🍂 Kids yoga & mindfulness teachers: don’t overcomplicate your fall lessons!

Some of the activities my students love MOST are also the simplest. 🎃

My Pumpkin Spice Yoga Cards have made their way into so many of my classes over the years, and I’m constantly finding new ways to use them:

🎃 Draw a card during morning meeting for a quick movement break
🍂 Add them to a calm-down corner for a body reset
🎶 Play “Pass the Pumpkin” — when the music stops, draw a card & try the pose
🧘 Use them for balance challenges, yoga games, transitions & more

You really don’t need an elaborate lesson to make mindfulness feel magical to kids.

Sometimes it’s one mini pumpkin, one yoga card, and a room full of kids excited to move! 🥹

And after teaching 5,000+ classes, that’s become one of my biggest philosophies: meaningful doesn’t have to mean made-from-scratch.

✨ And if you’re a kids yoga, mindfulness or SEL teacher thinking, “Can someone just plan the whole lesson for me?” — that’s exactly why I created Teach Smarter™, my monthly done-for-you curriculum membership.

If your kid loves Minecraft… imagine telling them THIS is what they’re doing on their day off school 👀💎

I took the world kids already love and brought it off the screen and into real life with MindfulCraft™—a morning of Minecraft-inspired movement, building, creating & mindfulness.

Kids will:

⛏️ tackle movement & obstacle-course missions
🧘 turn yoga poses into Minecraft-inspired adventures
🧱 work together on building challenges
💎 create their own MindfulCrafts
🌿 practice breathing & regulation along the way
💚 build confidence, teamwork & connection

Basically, they think they’re going on a Minecraft adventure!

I know we’re sneaking in movement, creativity, problem-solving, mindfulness & SEL. 😉🙌

And Minnesota families can experience it in person this month!

🍂 New Brighton families, we start TOMORROW!

Kids spend so much of their school day listening, transitioning, following directions and holding it together...

So when they come to Mindful Movement Kids, we don’t ask them to do MORE...

We move, play, breathe, and laugh! 🧘‍♀️✨

And underneath all that fun, they’re practicing some pretty big life skills:

🤍 noticing what’s happening in their bodies
🤍 identifying big feelings
🤍 finding tools that help them regulate
🤍 building confidence & connection
🤍 learning how to slow down and reset

Because emotional regulation doesn’t have to feel like another lesson...

It can feel like play! 🥹

Our September Mindful Movement Kids session begins tomorrow, September 8, and we still one last-minute spot available!

📍 New Brighton Community Center
🗓 Tuesdays
⏰ 5:05–5:55 PM

🍂📚 Kids yoga & mindfulness teachers… add these to your fall bookshelf!

There’s something about fall that makes storytime & movement feel extra magical. Maybe it’s the cozy weather, the changing leaves, or the fact that kids are SO ready to pretend they’re hiking through a forest, becoming a tree or stretching alongside a story. 🥹

A few of my favorite autumn yoga & mindfulness books:

📸 Trish’s Fall Photography by Kids Yoga Stories — such a sweet way to practice noticing colors, textures & the little details around us.

🏕️ Claire’s Camping Adventure by Kids Yoga Stories — perfect for bringing nature, imagination & movement together.

🍁 Stretch: A Yoga Story by Rose Harkness — a playful way to introduce yoga through story and movement.

🎃 Little Mouse Adventures: Halloween Yoga by Teresa Anne Power — one of my favorite not-too-spooky picks for October.

One of the things I love most about teaching mindfulness this way is that kids don’t have to sit perfectly still to practice it.

They can move. Notice. Imagine. Breathe. Connect.

That counts, too! 🤎

Save this post for your fall lesson planning because October has a way of sneaking up on us. 😂🍁

And now I need YOUR recommendations:

School is exhausting for kids, too. 💗

Especially during these first few weeks back.

New teachers. New routines. New expectations. New friendships. By the end of the school day, that can be a LOT for little bodies and brains to hold.

Which is exactly why I love what happens after that final bell. 🥹

While students are finishing their school day, I’m down the hall unrolling yoga mats, turning on the music and getting ready to welcome them into Mindful Movement Kids Yoga Club.

Then they come straight from their classroom to me.

We move. We play. We laugh. We breathe.

They get to shake off the school day, connect with friends and practice mindfulness & emotional regulation skills without it feeling like one more thing they have to “learn.”

It just feels FUN! 💕

And for busy Minnesota families, one of my favorite parts is how easy it can be:

🧘‍♀️ Yoga happens right at their school
🎒 Kids come straight from their school day
🚌 At participating schools, students can take the district activity bus home afterward

No extra trip across town. Just a pretty wonderful way to end a very big day.

📍 Mindful Movement Kids Yoga Clubs are enrolling in schools throughout Mounds View, White Bear Lake & Roseville!

If you have an elementary-aged kiddo in one of these districts, comment YOGA and I’ll point you toward registration for your school. 💗

And if you know another local parent whose child would absolutely LOVE this, tag them or send this their way! ✨

3 cozy fall breathing exercises for kids 🍂🎃

If you've ever told a child to “take a deep breath” in the middle of a BIG feeling and watched it accomplish approximately... nothing 😅 — this is why I love teaching breathing skills through play.

Kids don't have to sit perfectly still to practice mindfulness!

Sometimes mindfulness looks like...

🎃 balancing a tiny pumpkin on your belly
🍁 making a leaf dance with your breath
☕ pretending to cool down a mug of hot cocoa

They're playful.

AND memorable.

And most importantly, they give kids a chance to practice using their breath before they're in the middle of a moment when they really need it.

After teaching 5,000+ kids yoga & mindfulness classes, I've found that the strategies kids actually remember are usually the ones that feel like play first.

So save these for your classroom, calm-down corner, therapy space or cozy fall afternoon at home. 🍂

Which one would your kids choose first: 🎃, 🍁 or ☕?

And if you're new here, hi! 💛 I share playful, developmentally thoughtful kids yoga, mindfulness & SEL ideas you can actually use with children.

I used to lose sleep the night before the first kids yoga class of the school year... 🥹

Not because I was nervous to teach.

Because I was still trying to figure out WHAT I was going to teach.

What activity will actually work? What should I bring? Will they have fun? Do I have enough planned? Too much planned?!

I could turn one 50-minute class into HOURS of preparation and overthinking.

Today was the first day of my after-school Kids Yoga & Mindfulness Club for the new school year…

and it felt completely different. 💗

I logged into Teach Smarter™, opened our September I Am Ready to Learn collection, downloaded Week One, printed what I needed, packed my newly upgraded teaching cart (🥹✨), put on my new pink teaching shoes and headed to school.

That was it!

No late-night lesson planning.
No wondering if I had enough.
No scrambling to come up with one more activity “just in case.”

And when those little humans stepped onto their mats, I wasn't thinking about my lesson plan.

I was just… there.

Teaching. Connecting. Laughing. Watching them move, breathe and learn together.

Less time preparing to teach. More time actually teaching.

That is exactly why I created Teach Smarter™.

After years of teaching thousands of kids yoga & mindfulness classes, I wanted other teachers to have the thing I desperately wished I had: meaningful, engaging lessons that are already planned and ready to teach.

And September is already waiting for you. 💗

Your yoga mat setup might be doing more classroom management than you realize... 👀

After teaching thousands of kids yoga & mindfulness classes, one of the simplest things I’ve learned is this:

How I set up the room depends on what I’m asking kids to do.

⭕ Circle → connection, check-ins, breathing & community
🌙 Semi-circle → demonstrations, storytelling, props & visual instruction
〰️ Rows → bigger movement, active flows & more personal space

And sometimes? 😂

You walk into a school, library or community room with a beautiful plan in your head and discover that your only option is:

✨ wherever the mats fit ✨

Fellow mobile teachers KNOW. 😂🙋‍♀️

I used to think of mat placement as simply setting up the room.

After 5,000+ classes, I see it differently...

The setup is PART of the lesson.

Before I ever give an instruction, I can use the environment to communicate: Are we gathering? Connecting? Listening? Moving? Do you need your own space?

Such a tiny shift, but it can completely change the way a class feels. 💗

Kids yoga teachers & classroom teachers: I want to hear yours!

Are you usually:

⭕ CIRCLE
🌙 SEMI-CIRCLE
〰️ ROWS

…or are you on Team WHEREVER THE MATS FIT? 😂👇

What if one of their favorite school supplies could also remind them who they want to be?! ✏️💗

Meet our DIY Empowerment Pens ✨

For this back-to-school SEL activity, kids chose a word or message that meant something to them like KIND, BRAVE, STRONG, CAPABLE or something completely their own. And turned it into a school supply they can actually use!

But the best part wasn’t making the pen…

It was everything we got to talk about while they made it:

💭 What does your word mean to you?
💭 When might you need that reminder?
💭 What would it look like to practice it at school?

Because social-emotional learning doesn’t always have to look like a worksheet.

Sometimes it looks like colorful beads spread across a table.

Sometimes it sounds like kids talking about who they want to become.

And sometimes… the SEL lesson becomes their favorite school supply. 🥹✏️

This would be such a fun activity for the first weeks of school, elementary classrooms, kids yoga, mindfulness groups, school counseling or back-to-school community building.

Teachers & parents: what word would YOUR Empowerment Pen say? 👇

Mine might be “Keep going.” 💗
