A week of training to include shipboard fire behavior, fire attack and control, search, patient packaging and moving, downed firefighter CPR, aircraft emergencies, and more with the crew of the Emergency Response Team tasked with protecting the newest US Navy Destroyers when they go out on sea trials is always one of OSTA’s most important weeks of the year. It’s a honor to be trusted with such an important mission. Thanks to the BIW ERT for putting in the work!

Today was another fantastic day spent with a trailblazing group of fire instructors developing a brand new fire science program at the North Dakota State College of Science, breaking in their new Symtech Fire ST-Pro burn building. After our classroom presentation, we had the chance to conduct multiple live burn evolutions designed to add to their live fire skills. Thanks for the hard work and tremendous hospitality Chief Gilbertson and crew.

The Cannon AFB FD took delivery of their new Symtech Fire ST-Pro Flashover Simulator and completed their Flashover Instructor Development course which comes with every Symtech Fire Class A burn facility. We had a great day sharing some important information and Brotherhood with a group of firefighters who signed their name on the dotted line both for the protection of their base and all of us wherever their military missions take them. Thanks to Symtech for their faith in our instructors and those who hosted us today.

So you want to start a training company? There’s a whole lot more to it than all the “glamour” of being on the big stages and traveling the country or in OSTA’s case the world. It starts with mastering your craft and not just being proficient, but being at the top of your game at whatever skills you’re presenting. It comes with hundreds of hours developing lesson plans and PowerPoints. It continues with designing real-world props that are a teaching tool and not a liability. It’s about spending hours prepping your equipment, cleaning tools, filling SCBA cylinders, and organizing the trucks and trailers. It comes with hours in the office taking care of the not so sexy tasks of balancing the books, paying the bills, chasing payments and PO’s, planning all the logistics from airfare to lodging to rental cars to meals. Oh and by the way, are you INSURED??? Is the new conference you’re attending or teaching at covering you? And are you insured for what you actually do? This is the real training world, not just a hobby. We’re proud to still be going strong after 22 years as a company and we’re happy to see and work with the companies out there doing it right!
