Yours truly (Torrey) with a 19” wild Brown I landed Tuesday evening on a very small nymph. Two points of notice: we have a 10% off sale through Wednesday 9/23 on all used/clearance fly rods. We also have the brand spanking new Guideline Fario premium fly reel, they were just released last week and look great. We continue to see good bug activity and good fishing, I’m sure in part due to better water management on the part of CT DEEP since they took over from MDC in April 2025. Hatches are significantly better than last year. Water temps have been anywhere from mid 50s to mid 60s. It’s been a significantly better August & September than normal this year. Other than today and tomorrow, long range temps are all highs in the 60s, with lows averaging in the 40s, fall is here! -Torrey.

Pictured is customer and local artist Jim DeCesare with yet another great brown trout. Pay your dues and you can put some trout like this in your landing net. Total flow in the Permanent TMA/C&R is just over 240 CFS as I write this, they’re doing a small flow cut of 25 CFS this morning, which will bring it down to just under 220. Still a great medium-low level, water temps remain nice and cool. We’ve had better than normal conditions for August and September, and as a result the fishing has been good as have the hatches. The best fishing is mostly a mix of dry fly fishing with various bugs, and nymphing with primarily small flies, but all methods are having their moments. Customer Mike Andrews with one of the many beautiful trout he’s caught recently. Conditions remain very good with medium-low/normal flows and water temps on the upper to middle river ranging from low 50s to mid 60s, well within the trout’s wheelhouse. Seeing a variety of good hatches, which is creating some good dry fly fishing at moments, and nymphing with smaller flies has been consistent too. Long range weather looks good with highs averaging in the mid 70s and nights well down into the 50s and even into the 40s. Fall is moving in! -Torrey

Customer Nathan Mumford with a great Farmington River brown trout, caught on an Isonychia spinner. Our Labor Day Monday 9/7 store hours will be 8 AM to 3 PM. Also, as of 9/1 the entire upper 21 miles of the Farmington River from the dam in Riverton to the Rt 177 bridge in Unionville is Catch & Release until the second Saturday in April. Saw some good Iso hatches yesterday afternoon from about 1 to 4 PM, BWO’s also. Both bugs hatch best on cool/cloudy days like we had. We’re sitting pretty for the holiday weekend with a total flow in the mid 200s and great water temps. Make sure to click on the River Report for detailed hatch info and fishing advice. -Torrey.

Heavily spotted perfect specimen of a Farmington River brown trout by Brent M, caught on a nymph Sunday- looks wild to me, but that’s always an educated guess. Very good hatch of size 20-24 Blue Winged Olives (BWO’s) in the late afternoon & evening yesterday, and the trout were rising to them. A little less than 1/2” of rain last night, water levels are unaffected though. More rain coming through Thursday. Fishing remain solid with trout being caught via all methods. Check out this trophy rainbow that local guide Dave Machowski landed when we were fishing together yesterday- I have a scale built into my landing net and it weighed between 4.75-5 pounds and taped at 21”, a very fat fish. Caught in fast water on a size 20 nymph, 6x Cortland fluoro tippet. After a flow cut Monday so they could do some fisheries work on Tuesday, flows are back to normal and running a beautiful 230 CFS in the permanent TMA/catch & release. Riverton water temps have been in the low 50s, and a New Hartford water temps have been running between mid 50s and low 60s. This means you can fish the river from the dam all the way down to Canton and you won’t have to worry about needing to migrate upstream to find cold water in the afternoons because it’s plenty cold already. Make sure you have some small flying ants with you, there were tons of them on the water in the evening yesterday. -Torrey.

A beautiful brown trout caught in late July in high/dirty water on a tan & brown streamer by our newest employee Aiden- he is a wealth of knowledge about the Farmington River and trout fishing. New River Report is up, click the website link below for detailed fishing information, hatches, fly recommendations, etc. The state did a flow cut this afternoon to do some “fisheries work”, the dam was reduced from 200 CFS down to 75 CFS, putting the total flow in the Permanent TMA/C&R at about 100 to 110 CFS (low, but definitely fishable). On Tuesday 8/25 they will put the flow up to 175 CFS in the afternoon, and on Wednesday 8/26 they will increase it all the way back up to 200 CFS, probably in the morning. Fishing has been good! -Torrey.

Long time UpCountry employee Don Butler passed away this summer, and Grady wrote a nice blog post on our website about him. It includes an excerpt from one of the many fishing articles he wrote over the years. Don was a fixture at UpCountry for decades, a Church Pool regular, an outdoor writer, and a commercial fly tyer.
