HOT & SWEATY yoga practice this morning. Ya’ll it is hotter than all get out over here in New Haven. If you’ve been keeping up with my stories, you saw my whole little family was huddled in our one air conditioned room together this weekend. When I lived in Colorado I went whole summers without air conditioning. I would tough it out in the dry heat. But let me tell you, the humidity in CT is SOMETHING ELSE. I finally broke down and bought myself my first ever air conditioner last summer, and it has made all the difference. But guess what? There’s no air conditioning in my kitchen/now yoga studio! So I’m here for the sweat.

And Breathe.

Every Friday I hold the space for you to come be with yourself. Let yourself be guided and held through a gentle yoga practice of active stretching and a short flow sequence. It’ll reduce your anxiety and help you feel more grounded and centered in the world. Give yourself the opportunity to be held the way you hold others.

When the racial justice uproar settles down on social media, I often have to remind myself to come back to reflection and the work of undoing. Undoing the harm of white supremacy in myself and the world. Undoing my own internalized superiority. Undoing historical structures of oppression.

This work is for the long run.

Are you still undoing?

That feeling when you ease down on your mat, and realize that you’re not obligated to anyone or anything else right now. You know that feeling? The feeling of coming home to your body, your mind, your softness. The feeling of centering in your chest. The homing of your energy. The swell of air in your lungs. Feeling that, for now, this is about you and your movement.

This is the space I hope to hold for you.
One that you can be your whole expansive self and focus on your breath and your body. I hope to hold a space where you feel comfortable coming home to your body and moving in ways that feel good and challenging. I hope that you’ll learn to feel for what energy and movement you need and allow yourself to find it.

And if coming home to yourself in this way feels impossible, I hope to offer you a place to practice. Because trust me, this is a practice! Sometimes we feel it and lose it, and other times we’ve never felt like home and have to practice to find home in ourselves. Either way, it’s about showing up and being. Just being.

Ultimately, I hope I can help you come back to you.

ON FOURTH OF JULY

Today is in many ways a day of sadness. It’s a reminder of how this country was founded, when the white men declared independence, they didn’t declare that independence for anyone who wasn’t a white male. It didn’t include enslaved Africans or white women.

We need something better, we need something different, we need a country that is built on true equity for everyone. Part of that includes undoing our internalized white supremacy. It’s every day work.

I also believe there’s a space for both/and in this work. There’s space to fight the systems and also find joy with your family and loved ones. So join those zoom calls and get on the phone with people you love today. Build community and solidarity - this is not individual work. And while you’re at it, maybe mention how you’re showing up to undo what the ancestors of our country began. And have a laugh too.

There’s a lot of yoga out there that is focused on physical appearance & conventionally beautiful bodies. Yoga is so much more than that! Yoga has the ability to change us from the inside out - to totally change our experience of ourselves and our interaction with the world. Yoga can do so much for you!

ON FEELING GOOD

Today was the first day I did my own practice in about 10 days (other than prepping for teaching). Life was too overwhelming, and I couldn’t bare the thought of getting on my mat. A yoga teacher who takes breaks from yoga? The blasphemy! But I have to tell you, it felt GOOD!

It never ceases to amaze me that our body can handle breaks. It can handle stepping away. And then when the time is right, it is ever so grateful to come back. To be in the hear and now and moving again!

And I have to say, doing a practice left me feeling so much better. Ready to take on life and the world again!
