Brazil Club at Yale University

On November 3rd, an energy distribution station in northern Brazil was struck by lightning, starting a 14-day long blackout that initially affected 90% of households in the state. People were not able to access the internet, store food, or even have access to drinkable water – some families were forced to drink seawater. After days of total silence from Brazil’s president, the energy supply is starting to gradually be reestablished, but a total return to (pandemic-time) normalcy could take over 30 days.

This situation would never be acceptable in New York or São Paulo, and it is equally apocalyptic for the more than 700,000 people that live in the state. Brazil Club at Yale is organizing a fundraiser to help alleviate the crisis. We will redirect the funds to NGOs that are distributing food and water to those most affected by the emergency. Please consider donating any amount, as even small quantities will make an impact – for example, 2 dollars can already buy 5 gallons of water.

Brazil Club at Yale is thrilled to announce its second Coffee Chat of the year with Dr. Glenn Shepard Jr, an ethnobotanist, anthropologist, and filmmaker living in the Brazilian Amazon! Having worked with the Kayapo people in Brazil, Shepard will share how this indigenous group is using their warrior image, together with new media technologies, to establish their identity and combat the invasion of miners and loggers in their territories within the new political context of Brazil and the Covid-19 pandemic.

She is one of the world's leading corruption scholars, has published widely in the fields of law, economics, and public policy, and has edited nine books on aspects of corruption and administrative law.

Susan Rose-Ackerman is Henry R. Luce Professor Emeritus of Law and Political Science and Professorial Lecturer in Law, Yale University. She is an expert in political corruption and development, administrative law, law and regulatory policy, the nonprofit sector, and federalism. The Professor’s research interests include comparative regulatory law and policy, the political economy of corruption, public policy and administrative law, and law and economics.

In her work, Rose-Ackerman emphasizes the need to combine punishment with economic reforms to eliminate financial incentives for corruption. She has been closely monitoring the situation in Brazil for the past 5 years, and has even signed a manifesto in favor of the release of ex-president Lula after the leak of ex-judge Moro's Telegram talks.
Her work served as theoretical inspiration for Deltan Dallagnol, lead prosecutor in Operation Car Wash, the biggest corruption scandal in the history of Brazil, and one might say of the world (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/jun/01/brazil-operation-car-wash-is-this-the-biggest-corruption-scandal-in-history).
