A pitcher catcher duo from the 1974 NEIAC champs, three players from Coach Huml’s sectional title in 1982 and a long-time area umpire who graduated in 1981 have been added to the growing list of Bulldogs coming back on Saturday, October 3.
Hard throwing Steve Gottfried and hard hitting Denny Metzger are making plans to comeback for the alumni game. We look forward to these loyal alumni whose businesses ( Service Electric and Talon Restoration) have been great supporters of our program.
Steve Sims (“82”), Darren Peterson (“84”) and Tom Wharton (“84”), were all a part of the program when the Bulldogs captured a sectional crown in 1982 and plan on taking a few cuts on October 3. Darren would later toss a no- hitter against state-ranked Elmhurst as a senior.
Rounding out today’s entries, is Mike Jackson who served as the DH in 1981 and has been an umpire at diamonds around the area since graduating.

Dave Gentile, class of 1974, was a four member of Bulldog Baseball and a key player on the 1974 NEIAC champs. Dave posted an impressive career .355 batting average, but is probably better known as both a high school and college referee.
Three members from the class of 1976 are scheduled to return in the 50th anniversary year of their 76 conference championship. Garen Marks, an outfielder is slated to return along with Steve Hevel, shortstop, and John Moyer, a pitcher and outfielder. Coincidentally, both Steve and John were teammates of Coach Bischoff on the IPFW baseball team.
This years Alumni/Homecoming game is Saturday, October 3. Game time is 2:00. Gates open at 11:30. All Bulldog Alumni are welcomed to attend and participate, whether it be to play catch on the field, take a few BP cuts, pull a muscle jogging onto the field or just hang out and reminisce.

Today’s players for the October involve another group from the Don Huml era. Coach Huml, a Chicago native was a Norte Dame graduate who was a member of a Fighting Irish national championship football team under Coach Frank Leary in 1949. After stints as a high school coach in Arizona and North Judson High School and came to New Haven in the early 1960s. Coach Huml would succeed Paul Armstrong in 1968 and would win 3 NEIAC crowns and earn two sectional titles and a regional championship.

As the October 3rd, Alumni/Homecoming date approaches it’s time to introduce some of “seniors ” planning on attending.
Leading off is Bob Rohrbacher, class of 65, who will be in attendance. A FOUR-SPORT athlete, Bob earned All-NEIC recognition in three sports, and will be at least one athlete representing the Paul Armstrong era (1948-1967) for Bulldog Baseball. Bob also holds the distinction of catching a perfect game and later throwing out the first pitch as New Haven’s principal.
Dean Roney “71”, Mike Marhenke, “72” and Tom Muth “73” are also scheduled to return for the Alumni/Homecoming game and as teammates captured both the first sectional and regional titles for the Bulldogs under head coach Don Huml, head coach from 1968-1984.

Followers of Bulldog Baseball

Please help vote for one of our senior leaders, Cordell Roberson, in the race for ANEC Senior Leadership Award. A 1st Team All NE8 Conference selection and a big part of our winning seasons in 2025 and 2026, Cordell played all 4 years in a Bulldog uniform. Thanks for all your support- hopefully we can help bring him and our program some more hardware this season.

We are having a short summer session for our returning players and any incoming freshman interested in playing for the 2027 Baseball season.

and Wednesday, June 24

We will scheduled to have games on four of those dates and practices on the first and last dates. Message our page if you have an incoming freshman interested in playing so we can get him in contact with Coach Bischoff.

Finally, congratulations to senior 2B/RHP Cordell Roberson for being selected to the NE 1st Team All Conference, the first 1st selection since 2019.

Cordell hit .421 for the season, but was especially dangerous at the plate in conference, where he led all batter in the NE8 with a .526 batting average.

His career ends with finishes of-

7th place all-time in New Haven Baseball history with 139 career assists, tying Class of 2008 grad Zach Saalfrank.

11th place all-time in career walks at 55, tied with Tom Muth (1973), Craig “Hammer” Henry (1989), Sean Garber (2002) and Sean Ferguson (2017).

15th place all-time in career sacrifices with 11, tying Tracy Fancher (1987), Kevin Bussard (1991), and Pete Beber (2003).

Congrats on a great career and thanks for all you’ve done for New Haven baseball.

Congratulations to senior RF Caiden Rowland on capturing a spot on the NE8 2nd Team All Conference roster.

After hitting only .105 in his sophomore year, Rowland put in hours in the offseason to see his batting average sky rocket to .358 his junior year. Not to be outdone, Caiden hit .395 his senior season, doubling his double production from 4 in 2025 to 8 doubles in 2026. He also stole 7 bases and was one of 6 Bulldogs to get hit by a pitch at least 4 times.

Thank you for your 4 year with the Bulldogs and congratulations!
