My favorite piece of Long Island Sound history

Today is the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, so I wanted to highlight one of the few surviving ships from the invasion fleet, the USS LST-510, which is shown here in these photos around 1944 and in 2020. The ship landed tanks at Normandy, and after the war it was converted into civilian use as a ferry. Now named the Cape Henlopen, it is operated by Cross Sound Ferry and it carries passengers and vehicles between Long Island and New London, Connecticut.

Striper fishing from the Connecticut River to the Eastern Long Island sound has been good and will continue to improve over the next week. Plenty of fish in the lower Connecticut River up on the flats but the real action has been in the east end of the Sound. After last week’s heat wave water temps have crept up over 50 degrees. Warming water and an influx of herring and bunker have slot size to up to 30 lb fish feeding from the strength of the tide throughout the slack. Get them anyway you want them, topwater and soft plastics up shallow, diamond jigs and three-ways down deep but the real hot ticket has been flutter spoons. I anticipate after the weather on Memorial Day weekend the bass fishing is going to blow wide open!
