A new 2026-27 FNBA Series to keep you in the know.

The Dallas Mavericks are a perfect storm for John Poulakidas’ NBA plight.

A front office that has stockpiled power forwards like Pokemon (Washington, Marshall, Aldama, Morez Johnson) and a roster that is shooting-starved outside of Kyrie, Max Christie and Marcus Sasser. JP is primed and ready to fill in the gaps at the two spot.

Positional size (6’6”, 205 pounds) plus elite jump shooting is an eternally invaluable, tried and tested, formula for NBA survivability. Indispensable offensive utility sans the need to be compensated for as a defensive sitting duck.

John’s shooting resume precedes him. 40% three consecutive seasons at Yale, a sweltering 46.1% on 8.6 attempts per game throughout the 2025-26 G-League season, followed by a 40.3% clip on 77 attempts to wrap up the year with the Mavs.

But the 3PT variety that underpins those marks is the crucial factor. Poulakidas is a movement shooter through and through. 82% of his looks from deep came from above the break - a function of curling off picks, relocating from the corner to the 45 off the back of paint touches, and making it rain in transition before the defense has had a chance to blink.

The first sequence is the perfect microcosm to his shooting aptitude - sprinting from the deep corner off a dribble handoff, leveraging a push dribble to the top of the arc, squaring his feet at velocity, and putting on the blinders on the way up as the rear contest flies his way.

His lower-to-upper transition on the move is just as important as his snappy mechanics. Not to mention it is always a little sweeter with lefty verve (although I am biased).

A prototypical stretch four with the longevity to boot.

I vividly remember the “Hit Maker” Slam Magazine cover featuring John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Eric Bledsoe, Patrick Patterson and John Calipari during their Kentucky tenure. A stacked squad that had Darius Miller, DeAndre Liggins, Daniel Orton and Josh Harrellson as well despite losing in the Elite 8 to Joe Mazzulla’s WVU.

The UK quartet were all taken in the first 18 picks of the 2010 draft, each finding success in their own way. Pat Pat cemented himself as a dependable 8th man (at least for his first 7 seasons before slotting in 10th in OKC’s rotational pecking order) with the strength and length to hold water defensively and the laser 3PT shooting to balance the floor as a perimeter outlet on offense.

99.2% of Patterson’s 3PT makes were assisted. I could’ve hunted down each of his self-created treys over the years, but nothing beats the simplicity and effectiveness that was the very essence of his game. Biding his time and hoisting off the catch when the opportunity presented itself.

A consummate pro at all 5 of his NBA stops, let this be a figurative cap-tip to his rock-solid 11 years.

IncogNeto.

The Goran Dragić of T.J. McConnells. Raul was easy to root for - a judicious fourth guard that did everything in the triple threat.

Neto is a prime example of what I like to call a “steady-state” initiator, exhibiting a type of guile and sure-handedness that spares the need for a break-neck first step or flashy dribble combinations to make hay. He thrives with simplicity - turning the corner of picks sharply, keeping a wide stance so the lane is easily navigable, and keeping his live dribble compact for added ball security (his snake and crab dribbles are masterful).

Neto had a modest NBA come-up - a 2013 second-round pick that remained in Spain for two years before debuting for Utah in 2015. His four years with the Jazz set a solid template, but his production maxed out as a Wizard between 2020 and 2022 (steady averages of 8-2-3 in 20 mins of action nightly). Raul buried a scalding 48.7% of his looks between 10 and 16 feet in D.C. - primarily getting to his spots around the nail, gathering off two feet, and letting it fly.

His full name is Raul Togni Neto - a Portuguese name where the family name is Togni. According to the trusty folks at Wikipedia, “Neto” is a generational suffix meaning “grandson” - used for someone named after their father and grandfather. The equivalent of “III” in English. There is your learning for the day.

Since 2023, Raul has played in Brazil and Spain.

An airborne ace.

Trill was the antithesis of ground-bound. Give him runway on the roll at your own peril.

An All-Rookie Second Teamer and four-year starter for the still-stuck-in-a-rut (but ever-hopeful) Sacramento Kings from 2015 to 2019, Willie shared the frontcourt with Boogie Cousins his first two seasons before the backcourt brigade of De’Aaron Fox, Bogdan Bogdanović, and Buddy Hield took hold and Zach Randolph came to town as an elder-statesman starting four.

The ‘18-19 Kings were on the precipice of competence. A 39-43 season under Dave Joerger and more forward momentum than they’d seen in over a decade. Until, of course, they characteristically fired Joerger because of an infatuation with Luke Walton and delayed their eventual ascent another 3 long years.

Cauley-Stein made his way to Golden State in 2019, an experiment that seemed like a perfect fit before Curry went down and their campaign disintegrated into a pair of gap years. He spent two years as a Maverick from 2020 to 2022 and last suited up for Philly on March 2nd 2022. A 2-game dalliance that amounted to 6 total minutes of playing time.

From 2022 to 2025, Willie spent individual seasons in the G-League, Italy, and China. He has not played during the 2025-26 campaign.

D-Loaded.

Russell is officially Shanghai-bound and the meme factory inevitably followed suit. 30 years old, 12 seasons, career averages of (as they stand at least) of 17-3-6.

It goes without saying that D-Lo being forced out (traded twice in 5 months then waived) is not for a lack of merit/talent. He is still an exceedingly capable ball carrier and part-time offensive innings eater. Sometimes the powers that be i.e. the 30 finite front offices simply have other ideas, for better or worse. Teams are more future-focussed than ever and high-usage guards, particularly those of the ageing variety, aren’t exactly en vogue.

Russell saw the writing on the wall and made a pivot internationally that could fructify to epic magnitude in a market that has deified the likes of Stephon Marbury & Gilbert Arenas over the years. Russell’s CBA fanfare should be immense.

As for D-Lo’s clutch resume, it is expansive - a function of the freewheeling creative discretion he had offensively at multiple stops along the way. This could be a two-parter if I included all clutch moments that outside the go-ahead/game-tying criteria.

D-Lo’s 2018-19 campaign will forever be his magnum opus - a truly captivating run of prolific shot-making, pick & roll mastery, as well as collective unison on the team front. A story so special that big-name free agents crashed the party and disassembled the nucleus overnight.

Three-Lee.

An ironclad clutch resume for a long-time starting-caliber two-guard. Lee was a sharpshooting vagabond who did damage from beyond the arc with deadbang accuracy rather than volume (notably never eclipsing 5 3PAs per 36 minutes in a season). Like Luke Kennard, he had a modest load-up, a low release point, and was at his best as a set shooter off the catch.

Courtney was traded 3 times in 4 years by the conclusion of his rookie contract and ended his career a 6-time trade subject. But his involuntary peripateticism (word of the day) was typically circumstantial - as a throw-in for a star-centric deal or his organisation merely shuffling the deck chairs. His salary slot routinely fit the bill while his on-court output and schematic fit was never a point of contention, so the minutes kept flowing and the contracts kept coming for 12 prosperous seasons.

Many will elicit Courtney’s infamous bungled alley-oop layup to beat the buzzer in Game 2 of the 2009 NBA Finals as a counterfactual, whereby Rashard Lewis stopped Kobe in his tracks with a brick-wall backscreen and Hedo Türkoğlu threw the lob half a second too early. But simply put, the synchronicity from screen-to-lob-to-finish was ever so slightly off-kilter, which caused Lee to catch the ball below the net and sneak it up as he was floating behind the backboard t velocity. Not to mention he was a rookie holding down a starting role under the brightest lights.

In Layman’s Terms (a phrase that harkens back to my law school days).

Jake’s NBA career started out with a bang, pouring in 17 PTS in 8 minutes (6-8 FG, 5-7 3PT) in an already-decided home clash against the newly formed KD Warriors. His mechanics were exemplary, from the compact vertical motion to the crisp, uninterrupted follow through. But alas, he teased marksmanship that never eventuated (30% career).

Layman accumulated half a dozen seasons - 3 apiece as a Blazer and Timberwolf. However, contrary to what his debut eruption led the masses to believe, it was slashing rather than jump shooting that was his bread and butter in the pros. He flaunted a 39.5 inch max vertical at the 2016 Draft Combine, and his leaping proclivities parlayed nicely with his spindly build and directional celerity.

Jake cast a wide net as an in-game-dunker - lob finishes, two-dribble drives into one-handed punched, reverse jams traversing along the baseline. He was an outwardly instinctual cutter that weaponized back screens, slip screens, backdoor dives, and slot cuts to his full advantage when seeking out openings and exploiting defensive creases.

Since 2023, Layman has played in Japan averaging roughly 15 PPG and 6 RPG across 4 seasons, including a 40.3% 3PT clip in 2025-26.

The Limitless Range Launcher.

Lamb was the type of offense-first swingman who always got by. His 3PT% ducked below 35% more than it did the inverse, but the threat of his jump shooting prowess was always palpable. My inkling is that he dabbled in dribble pull-ups more often than his archetypal counterparts which manifested in the raw numbers, but I cannot currently verify that intuition due to NBA.com’s shot dashboard bugging out.

Jeremy entered the league with unmistakeable three-level scoring upside and the physical profile to man either wing spot. He had a brief preseason run with the Rockets in 2012, alongside flight-averse and facetiously self-proclaimed women Royce White who was drafted 4 spots later, before being sent to OKC in the late-in-the-piece Harden deal.

Through no fault of his own, Lamb was only ever privy to four Playoff berths. He inked lucrative second and third contracts in Charlotte and Indiana, two middling Eastern Conference outfits that had voids to fill on the wing.

Jeremy last played for the Kings in 2022, though had a stint in the G-League in 2023-24 averaging 17-6-3 before suffering a season-ending ankle injury. He retired in August 2024 and currently dates Sacramento owner Vivek Ranadive’s daughter. He has reportedly had influence behind-the-scenes as a “shadow GM”, notably with the Mike Brown firing (but take that pure speculation with a grain of salt).

The Cyclone from Coney Isle.

Whitehead’s career spanned just 89 games across his rookie and sophomore seasons, but he was a Brooklyn native Who Had the priceless luxury of repping his hometown on the NBA hardwood.

A power-guard with a rugged frame (6’4”, 213 pounds) who incessantly overpowered his positional peers, downhill finishing craft was Isaiah’s meal ticket as a pro. He wielded a spasmodic dribble cadence and wide-bearing combos that plenty of defenders couldn’t quite put their finger on. He slickly modulated his one-two while navigating the lane and was rarely being bumped off his line, which gave his driving game an uncanny blend of physicality and elusivity. Isaiah’s near-40% rim frequency was a stellar mark.

Whitehead’s tenure in the Association may have been short-lived, but he racked up plenty of eye-popping moments as an up-and-comer on the early Kenny Atkinson-era Nets. Particularly as a stealthily disruptive help-side contestor, as Rudy Gobert, Zach Randolph and Enes Freedom (among others) found out the hard way. A sprinkling of instinctual and dexterous swats on the back-side that were well worth dredging up to prevent them being lost in the archives.

After averaging 20-4-4 in the G-League from 2017 to 2019, Isaiah spent 8 seasons playing in Russia, Kazakhstan, Montenegro, Turkey, Germany, Israel, and Poland. He won a Kazakhstan League championship in 2019.

Game 6 Klay ❌ 36-Point Lead Klay ✅

A 6-time occurrence for a juggernaut-dwelling deluger. A two-way stud, supreme movement shooter, & habitual heat-check orchestrator whose dribble independency will forever be etched in the stones of history. A dynamite skillset typified by an even-keeled, unassuming temperament that never led him too far astray.

I need not re-hash the dynastic Dubs era - masterfully concocted, collectively complementary, carefully curated, and seamlessly coalesced. An ongoing rotating cast of frustratingly (at least for their rivals) fit-for-purpose draftees and short-term veteran bodies to fill in the gaps. But in the end, they fell victim to their own dominance. A demonstrative 5-year run that brought extraordinary mileage and eventually reached its tipping point in 2019.

Across 5 seasons (2014-19) Klay amassed 490 total games and 16,476 minutes of floor time. As more intellectually inclined individuals than me have proclaimed, correlation and causation are not impliedly linked, though Klay’s fortune-changing injury scares in his late 20s certainly pose to challenge the veracity of that notion.

Thompson is set to spearhead a platoon of Heat snipers alongside THJ, Fontecchio, & most intriguingly Ryan Conwell who, in my mind, will crack the rotation before long.
