A lot of people never actually calculate what their weekly drives are costing in gas.
We built a simple commute cost calculator to help put real numbers on it.
If some of your trips are under 10 miles, this may help you think through whether an e-bike could make practical sense for part or all of your routine.
If the numbers surprise you, we’re happy to talk through practical commuter and electric bike options.

Every week we see the same thing. Someone buys a two or three hundred dollar e-bike from an overseas website because money is tight and they need transportation fast. I understand the need. But almost no one understands the real risks.
These ultra-cheap imports often use questionable electronics, uncertified batteries, weak welds, and substandard components. When the motor or controller fails, there are no replacement parts. No shop in New Orleans will repair them. When the frame cracks, there is no warranty. And if someone gets hurt because the bike failed, there is no company in the United States to stand behind it. The seller is overseas and insulated from all responsibility.
People think they are saving money. What they actually get is a multi-hundred-dollar paperweight or a ride that can put them in the hospital.
There are safer options, even for riders with bad credit or no credit at all.
In less than two weeks, we are launching a new leasing program that will allow virtually anyone to qualify for a brand new UL safety certified e-bike. If something breaks under normal use, it is covered under the lease. Bring the bike back and we repair it at no cost to you. No gambling on dangerous equipment. No getting stuck with something no shop will touch. You get reliable transportation you can count on.
For riders who are on a tight budget, Blue Bikes is also an option. It is not perfect, but it is safe, maintained locally, and backed by a real service team.
If you or someone you know is thinking about buying a bargain e-bike online because it is only three or four hundred dollars, please talk with a real shop first. We want people riding something safe, repairable, and supported long term, not something that fails the moment they need it most.

The Hidden Risk of Some Carbon eBikes – What You Need to Know 🚲
Lately, we've seen an influx of mass-produced electric bikes with carbon frames and forks selling for as little as $1,600. While carbon fiber has long been used in pro-level race bikes, there's a serious hidden danger when it's used in budget-friendly eBikes built for the mass market.
Here's the issue:
Unlike steel or aluminum, carbon doesn't bend — it breaks. And when it breaks, it often gives no warning. A bike frame or fork can look completely fine on the outside, even after it’s been weakened by normal riding stress, a fall, or being clamped too tightly. Then one day — without warning — it can catastrophically fail.
That's why many professional cyclists retire their carbon race bikes after one season. So how is it safe for everyday riders to trust mass-market carbon eBikes designed to be used for years?
At Ebike NOLA, we prioritize safety and durability.
We hand-pick bikes that are built to last with frames you can trust — because in New Orleans, we ride on rough streets, under a hot sun, and often haul groceries, gear, or passengers. Your safety matters more than flashy marketing.
🛑 If you're shopping for an eBike, ask questions about the frame material and how it's tested. Better yet, come by and let us show you the difference.

🔥 Buyer Beware: The Hidden Dangers of Cheap E‑Bike Batteries 🔥
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently confirmed that around 180 low-cost e-bikes sold under no-name “white box” brands on Amazon and similar sites have exploded or ignited deadly fires across the country.
🔋 These fires are rooted in poor-quality lithium‑ion batteries that overheat and malfunction. The battery packs lack proper UL or EN safety certifications.
The problem is worst in urban areas (New York City alone has seen over 200 e-bike battery fires and multiple fatalities in recent years) and often stem from users who purchase extremely low budget e-bikes.
⚠️ For your safety:
Always buy from reputable brands with a local dealer network.
Avoid the temptation of cheap, unbranded e-bikes.
Charge your ebike using the charger that came with your ebike.
Run your charger behind a surge protector to protect electronics from utility line surges.
Lastly, be mindful of where and how you charge, store and operate your ebike. Heat, water intrusion and excessive jarring (such as when in a collision or from dropping your ebike) are the primary external factors that lead to ebike failures. Cheaper e-bikes are typically less robust and thus are more prone to damage from these external factors.
Lesson: Just as with most things in life, you get what you pay for. With e-bikes, cutting corners can be lethal. 🙅♂️

🚴♂️ New Arrivals Alert! 🛵
Heybike just sent over three of their latest e-bikes for me to test ride and review — and I’m diving in with a critical eye. 👀
🔧 Models on deck:
• The Hauler, a compact cargo hauler built for utility
• The Horizon, a full suspension folding e-bike
• The Ranger S, a hardtail folding beast for mixed terrain
I’m especially curious to see how these bikes hold up in real-world use — not just performance, but also how well they’re built, how they feel, and how Heybike handles customer service if anything goes sideways.
They’re priced super affordably, but does that come at a cost? I’ll let the ride (and the wrench) decide. 💬
Stay tuned — full impressions coming soon. If you’ve had any experience with Heybike, drop your thoughts below. I want to know what I’m in for. ⚙️👇
