Being idle during an Injury is never the answer, there’s a way to work around everything. Just remember when you’re ramping things up again, don’t get overzealous, you’ll get it all back in time. You got there before so you’ll get there again. Today I used FatGripz to govern how much I could deadlift to make sure I didn’t do too much weight to aggravate my recovering partially torn lat. Be like a shark and never stop moving.

It’s my observation that only 20% of gym goers are functionally strong (strength that actually carries over to real life applications). 80% of those are functionally strong are women. Doing the math… roughly 4% of male gym goers are functionally strong strong. Men, it’s time to change the routine. Stop with body building splits that have little to no carry over to real world use and often lead to imbalances and over use injuries. Call me when you’re ready change your ways.

I didn’t want to do that workout. I did it anyhow. My reward is 24 hours of a sense of accomplishment instead of regret. Whatever you’re leaning towards skipping today, do it anyhow. Your couch will still be there later today.

Every injury I get is another opportunity to learn. I have theee options at my age with training…
1)Learn/Adapt
2)Quit all together
3)Continue to attempt to jam a square peg into a round hole until I incur an injury that I am no longer able to rebound from.
Current Injury….Strained/possibly torn oblique.
I put together a full body workout that avoided any further strain on the oblique. Ideal workout? Not at all. Effective enough? You bet.
When life zigs, you must zag.
Dear fellow 40 something men, sick of your routine you’ve been doing for 20+ years? Ready to improve your movement and functional strength? Give me a call!

Happy New Year! Do your cardio in 2026. Do it for your heart and not for fat loss.

You’ll never regret the fact that you showed up, I promise.

As much as I would love to rank exercise higher because that is the service I sell, the truth is….
Sleep>Diet>Exercise
Don’t bother counting reps or calories if you’re not keeping track of the hours and the quality of the sleep you’re getting. The old saying saying was that you can’t out workout a bad diet, it should really state that you can’t out workout or out diet poor sleep. Dial in your sleep and good things will happen. Nothing can replace good sleep. If you’re one of those “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.” people, good news for you, death will probably come sooner!

Keep all facets of health in their own lanes. When you are doing cardio always remember youre doing it for the improvement of your cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Cardio should not be viewed as a means to burn fat. Does it burn fat? Yeah, it can but that shouldn’t be the reason youre doing it. That can only lead to the faulty thinking that more cardio means more fat burning but that will also lead to muscle wasting over time. Do cardio for your cardio respiratory system and follow protocols geared towards those goals whether its interval or steady state training. As for weight training…do it for the goal of building strength and/or muscle mass and nothing else. Does weight training elevate your heart rate? Yes but don’t count it as your cardio work. Does lifting weights raise your basil metabolic rate over time? Yes but don’t lift weights thinking it will lead to the fat loss you want. Where does fat loss happen then? On your pillow and on your plate. If your lack of sleep has your hormones out of whack and your finding yourself unable to have any regulation as to what goes into your mouth and how often you’re elevating your insulin levels, it doesn’t matter how much you try to over compensate by riding in the other two lanes of fitness you’ll never achieve the body composition thar you’re aiming for. Keep everything in the appropriate lane and good things will happen.

Observations from a big box gym…guys 35 and up, your workout sucks and no longer suits your real needs and is most likely holding you back from what you are trying to achieve. Time to
Change it up guys. What good is an impressive physique if it is functionally way weaker than it appears?

Workout today because it makes you feel good and not because you are trying to offset the upcoming meal. A)guilt mentality is never the right way. B)Calories in/out is a myth.

When someone comes to you with the goal of being able to carry their own child and send you a picture of the results of the work they put in…priceless.

11 years ago I realized that there wasn’t anyone I really wanted to work for anymore besides myself and my clients. There was a time when I’d spend half my day driving from one gym to another to piece together a full schedule of clients. Eventually I was able to consolidate to one location uptown where I paid rent to use a space. Then, when things seemed to be smooth sailing, the world as we knew it was upended with the pandemic. During that time I started to buy up equipment and loaded up my truck with everything and met clients in parks and their yards to keep their fitness journeys alive and well. After a crazy spring and early summer of running around everywhere, I decided to convert my shed into a one on one studio and the rest is history. Thanks everyone who helped me get to the 11 year mark!
