Burlington-Two Weeks Without a Substantive Customer Concern Response Is Unacceptable
Dear Burlington Customer Relations,
I am writing regarding a cash transaction on 17 August 2026.
Although the amount involved is only three cents, my concern is about the principle and fairness of the policy that was explained to me.
I purchased an item for $3.99 and paid with a $100 bill. When I received my change, I noticed that it was three cents short. I brought this to the cashier’s attention, and she explained that Burlington does not have pennies and therefore rounds the customer’s change down.
I then asked a very simple question: If I had only $3.96, would Burlington have allowed me to purchase the $3.99 item? The answer was no, because I would have been three cents short.
That is precisely my concern.
If Burlington requires the customer to pay the full amount owed, then Burlington should likewise return the full amount owed to the customer. If the company has made a business decision not to maintain pennies at its registers, the financial consequence of that decision should not automatically be passed to the customer.
I recognize that three cents is an insignificant amount of money. This complaint is not about financial hardship; it is about the fairness and consistency of the practice.
A customer who is three cents short cannot simply round down the amount owed to Burlington. Burlington should not be permitted, as a matter of customer-service policy, to do the same when it owes the customer change.
If exact change cannot be provided, I believe the appropriate practice is to round in the customer’s favor to the next available denomination rather than shortchange the customer.
I am not requesting another acknowledgment.
I am not requesting another statement that my concern has been “forwarded to the appropriate team.”
I am requesting clarification of Burlington’s official cash-rounding policy and, yes, as a matter of principle, I would also like my three cents returned.
Fourteen days is long enough.
