This doesn't bode well for the next hurricane season.
"Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Cameron Hamilton told emergency managers that states should prepare to respond to disasters without federal help in as soon as six months, Politico reported this week. But two recent federal government reports indicate that funding and staffing challenges at state and local emergency management agencies could make that difficult."

States could be expected to shoulder more disaster and recovery costs within six months, but federal reports document staffing and funding shortfalls at state and local emergency management agencies.

The Louisiana Public Service Commission (LPSC) is rushing to vote on approval of seven gas-fired power plants for Meta's Hyperion Data Center in Richland Parish, near Monroe, LA.
We feel that this vital vote should be held after state-wide elections and new Commissioners are in place.
This important vote will affect ratepayers across the state, as Entergy Louisiana supports an unprecedented buildout to aid Meta's multi-billion dollar Hyperion facility. If this vote is rushed through in December (in Shreveport), the LPSC will be setting a precedent of the worst kind, and duping Louisiana citizens into supporting a billionaire's whim - at the expense of Louisiana rate-payers!
Additionally, in an era when we are experiencing the worst air quality, heat and drought, and other related issues, do we really want to add MORE highly polluting sources?
Please contact your Commissioner and ask him to postpone the vote, or to vote against accepting the negative impacts of this rushed decision. There needs to be a lot more thought put into this before moving forward.

America’s rapidly accelerating AI data center construction boom has encountered its toughest federal challenge to date. A newly introduced congressional proposal would permanently prohibit large-scale AI computing facilities on all federally owned and managed land across the country — while giving facilities already in operation only 30 days to start closing and completely removing their infrastructure.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib introduced the No AI Data Centers on Federal Lands Act, formally numbered H.R. 9939, on July 23, 2026. If passed into law, it would bar qualifying AI data centers, along with all associated power and network infrastructure, from operating anywhere under U.S. federal government control. Its scope reaches beyond public parks and forests, covering military bases and every other type of federal property.

While most regulatory measures allow existing operations to continue, this proposal would also apply to facilities already constructed on federal land. Within 30 days of enactment, federal agencies would have to stop every affected data center project and begin dismantling its equipment and buildings. Each location would subsequently require complete environmental remediation and restoration of the land under federal environmental protection laws.

Backers say federal lands are entrusted to the public for conservation and public access, rather than conversion into industrial computing sites that use vast quantities of electricity and water. They describe the prohibition as a practical measure to safeguard public assets against the substantial resource demands of expanding AI infrastructure.
