Bike Easy and the Lafitte Greenway Partnership are deeply saddened by the tragic death of a 62-year-old woman bicycling in the Treme neighborhood on Sunday, April 5. While all the details of the crash may not yet be public, we know her family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, and the broader biking community are left grieving yet another preventable loss on our streets.
This tragedy underscores the urgent need to build a culture of safety and shared responsibility in New Orleans; one supported by infrastructure that protects all road users. Unfortunately, the crossing lights on N Claiborne and the Lafitte Greenway intersection have been out for years, and need to be a priority for the new Administration to address in partnership with LADOTD. Let’s look out for each other and others so everyone can get around our city safely.
Both Bike Easy and the Lafitte Greenway Partnership are in communication with elected officials and city agencies to gather more information and to advance solutions that can prevent future tragedies. We remain committed to advocating for safer streets and will share ways for the community to take action in the coming days.
In the meantime, we pause to acknowledge this devastating loss and hold those affected in our thoughts.
