In 1971, in Woodside, California, a centre opened on the idea that the way a horse walks could be medicine. 🐴

The National Center for Equine Facilitated Therapy has been running ever since, on about twelve acres, and it does something narrower and more clinical than most people expect. This is not simply riding for enjoyment. Hippotherapy uses the horse's movement as a treatment tool, delivered by licensed physical, occupational and speech therapists.

The reason it works is mechanical. A walking horse moves a rider's pelvis in three dimensions — forward and back, side to side, and in rotation — at roughly the same rhythm and pattern as human walking. For a child who has never walked, or an adult relearning after injury, that is an hour of the correct movement being fed into a nervous system that cannot generate it alone. You cannot reproduce it on a table or a machine.

Alongside the clinical work, NCEFT runs mental health and resilience programmes, adaptive riding, and services for veterans and first responders. Roughly a hundred people a week come through, aged from two to over eighty-five.

Fifty-five years, and the treatment still has four legs.

Have you seen hippotherapy work?

Interesting

Research matters because one well-designed study can change practice, improve welfare, and transform lives. Funding research fuels that ripple effect.

Parents, hours of time to yourself to do your Christmas shopping or have a date night. Feed them dinner, dress them appropriately for the weather and drop the kids off at the farm to play outdoors for hours.
