How do you make several different wildlife habitats feel like they all belong in the same room?

For this Throwback Thursday, we dug into the Wilderness by Klaus video archives to revisit one of our favorite, and most challenging, private trophy room projects.

No two trophy rooms are ever the same. Our design and artist teams look at the specimens, the architecture of the space, the stories behind the collection, and how each habitat needs to connect with the next.

The goal is not simply to build individual displays. It is to create an environment where the rockwork, vegetation, scenery, lighting, and mount placement work together, and where the transitions from one habitat to another feel natural rather than forced.

Projects like this are where design, craftsmanship, problem-solving, and wildlife knowledge all have to come together.

This massive private display in Canada was designed to do more than showcase a collection. It was built to create an experience.

For this project, the Wilderness by Klaus team coordinated with a professional lighting company to integrate an extensive lighting system throughout the space. Using a touchscreen control pad, the owner can change the look and feel of the display at will, shifting the mood, weather, and time of day to create a completely different atmosphere.

Just as important was making the technology disappear.

Lighting fixtures were carefully concealed behind habitat elements wherever possible so the realism of the display stayed intact. The goal was simple: let the light shape the environment without pulling attention away from it.

Take a look from above at one of our most ambitious installations at the Golabchi Education Center in Georgia.

As part of this extensive project, the Wilderness by Klaus team constructed a life-size replica of an African baobab tree, creating a dramatic centerpiece around Mr. Golabchi’s remarkable wildlife specimens.

But the tree is only part of the story.

Custom mural work, habitat elements, vegetation, terrain, and carefully placed details all work together to give the collection a sense of place. Rather than simply viewing individual specimens, visitors are surrounded by an environment designed to help tell their story.

When a display includes this many unique mounts, the challenge is not simply finding room for everything. It is making sure every piece has room to make an impact.

For this wildlife education project in Georgia, our team was tasked with bringing a large collection together within one massive display while avoiding a finished environment that felt crowded or overly busy.

The solution came through thoughtful composition.

By strategically layering custom rockwork, vegetation, terrain, and muralwork, our artists created natural visual breaks and depth throughout the scene. These elements guide the eye through the exhibit, give individual mounts their own presence, and allow the entire environment to flow as one cohesive experience.

A wildlife display should feel alive.

Creating action indoors is about much more than placing mounts in a habitat.

The position of each animal, the terrain beneath them, the surrounding vegetation, the backdrop, and even the direction of movement all help tell the story.

In this scene, the interaction between the lynx and ptarmigan creates a moment that feels like it was captured in the wild. The surrounding mountain habitat gives that action a believable setting and turns the display into something you can experience from across the room or study up close.

A trophy can bring back the memory of a hunt, but the right environment can bring back the entire setting.

This takes us back to Ely, Minnesota, and one of those installations that shows just how big immersive storytelling can get.

At the North American Bear Center, our team installed this massive custom replica pine tree as part of a lifelike natural environment, complete with carefully placing two bear cub mounts into the finished scene.

From the smallest habitat element to a tree that commands an entire room, details matter.

The texture of the bark. The placement of a branch. The surrounding rockwork. The relationship between the animals and their environment. Every element works together to make the scene feel believable up close and help visitors connect with the story being told.
