Dear GNEUSKF kenshi,
Please see the tentative schedule of the Cleveland Taikai this year.
This schedule (plan) is the most up-to-date plan after the discussion with Kato sensei and Inosh*ta sensei.
March 24 (Fri). 6-8 pm. Joint Practice.
March 25 (Sat). 9 am-noon. Kendo Seminar and Joint practice.
March 25 (Sat). 1 pm- Tournament starts. Adult individuals match only.
March 26 (Sun). 8:30 am- Noon. Junior individuals and Team. Adult Team.
March 26 (Sun). 1pm-3 pm Promotion Exam (upto 4 dan).
Since many of Japanese Language Schools (Ohio, Michigan, NY, etc.) will have graduation ceremonies on March 25 (Saturday) and junior kenshi and their parents will not be able to participate in the tournament on March 25. To help these families, we plan to host junior and team (both junior and adult) events on Sunday.
The registration website will be ready soon, and we will send you another email with the link for the registration.
Due to the new minor (under 18 years old) protection law, our university (Case Western Reserve University) is asking us to comply with various regulations to have the junior tournament (under 18 years old). We plan to host junior divisions as scheduled. If approved, please understand that all the adult participants (including the parents entering the gym) must go through the compliance regulations. We will be sure to send you more information later.
Sincerely,
Shigemi Matsuyama

Dear Kendo Friends:
With a heavy heart, I regret to announce the cancellation of the 32nd annual Cleveland Kendo Tournament / GNEUSKF Championships scheduled for March28, 2020.
We were hoping that the nascent coronavirus epidemic starting to affect the whole world will come under a reasonable control by now, but it appears that this is in fact getting worse. We are seeing exacerbation rather than amelioration, and it does appear that the clusters of outbreak s are just beginning, indeed far from reaching their peaks in the United States. Fortunately Ohio is one of the few remaining states without positive cases, but this may be due to the fact that testing was not widely available until recently. With this in mind, we have decided it is more prudent to make a decision at this point rather than wait until the last moment, jeopardizing everybody’s heath.
We, therefore, will cancel the entire events for the weekend of March 27 – 29, 2020.
As a personal note, I have been directly involved with the tournaments past 31 years consecutively, and this was a heart-wrenching decision. However, everybody’s health is more important than anything else. Please understand the situation, and I apologize sincerely to those who have already made travel arrangements.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Inosh*ta
Chairperson
Tournament committee.
