THIS DATE IN HUGE GOLIATHS HISTORY NOVEMBER 17, 2013:
TO THE 4X DEFENDING CHAMPIONS:
WE HUGE! HUGE! HUGE! HUGE!
This was without a doubt the most satisfying of our 4 titles as it was EARNED against the highest caliber opponent we have faced since inception of the franchise. Then of course the game itself was an absolute instant classic. If you were not present you missed out on some GREAT baseball and real baseball drama. So without further adieu your HALFTIME HIGHLIGHTS:
GOTHAM 4 YONKERS 3
Craig Robinson toed the rubber for the home team and enjoys a customary strong outing going 7 1/3 yielding one earned on 6 hits K'ing 11 with 2 BB's and 2 HBP. Robby was tough in tight spots stranding the bases with a punch out in the fourth and leaving a runner in scoring position after one out in the fifth highlighted by a HUGE backwards K of the 3 hole hitter Lou Gigante. Of the final 9 batters faced Craig struck out 6 including the side in the sixth.
An early critical play which should not be forgotten happened top 3 when with the bags juiced a base hit scored one run and the trail runner failed to score as Dave Gonzalez nailed the speedy kindergartener Steve Smith attempting to go first to third. Great tag by Felix Polanco finished up the play nicely before Julio Fernandez could reach home.
Bottom four a leadoff walk to TJ Varricchio was followed by a steal of second as called by Coach Haas and a 2 out steal of third SURPRISING Coach Haas and was cashed in by a clutch 2 out line drive single by Donnie Ahrenberg to tie the contest at 1.
The Titans answered top 5 with a run to retake the lead but the champions waste no time in the home half as a 2 out knock by Gonzalez followed by Dan Nigro getting hit with his first of two for the game set up another crucial play. An impromptu double steal engineered by Gonzalez and Nigro set the stage for another clutch 2 out rip by TJ to make the score 3-2. The Yonkers club would threaten top 7 as Andrew Hargadon led off with a single but was summarily erased via a foolish attempt to run on Donnie and is disintegrated by a laser beam authored by #23.
Top 8 some more excitement as a 2 out blast to the left center graveyard was gobbled up by the always reliable G with the tying run homeward bound. With victory in sight and the visitors last call an old nemesis-the lead off base on balls- cropped up its ugly head and after a sac (I think that's what they call it) and a WP a Daniel Vitro bouncer sneaked through the drawn in diamond and we were tied. Another Hargadon hit on the subsequent pitch and a ground ball moving both runners set the stage for the key play of the game. The veteran Fernandez topped another soft chopper half way down the third base line and Ken Frawley (W) shot off the mound to the foul line and picking up a wet ball pivoted and flung a toss that Frank Varricchio deftly sucked out of the dirt to just nab the batter/runner as the potential go ahead run was looking for the dugout. Potential disaster averted we picked ourselves up and dusted ourselves off and proceeded to turn our attention to Chris Crocco.
Mark Hughel got things going with a HUGE leadoff single up the box and Chris Ahrenberg proceeded to execute that beautiful maneuver I believe..yes, a sac...to put the winning run in scoring position. (A review of past Goliath ledgers indicates this was the SIXTH such time in 4 years that has been accomplished and TWICE in this game alone- a Gotham record we hope is never matched). With his Tiger teammate dropping two 12-6 curveballs everyone in the park was caught off guard by a 1-1 fast ball to Dave G who was not the least surprised and drilled a liner that was TOO HOT for the second baseman to handle as Mark advanced to third. Initial scoring charged an error but subsequent post game inquiry awarded a base hit to the clutch Gonzalez. After an uncontested steal of second our opponents elected to pass Matt to set up a force loading the bags but the oft times wild Crocco could only manage one strike in 5 offerings to TJ and the resulting walk off walk made it 2 consecutive years the championship was decided in the bottom of the ninth.
This was truly a great season although we did lose more games this year than any of the previous 3. With frequent absences and some injury we scrapped some weeks and EVERYONE who appeared on the score sheet from opening day until today contributed something to this championship.
We welcomed some new blood and it is my hope we can establish further what is our greatest strength-BROTHERHOOD.
Congratulations to a fine group of men I look forward to hearing all the great-and NOT so great-stories at the dinner.
I shall send an administrative mail during the week to address a few items. Now is the time to savor this HUGE victory and enjoy some Sunday afternoon pigskin.
Thanks to all "my boyz".
