I’VE BEEN AROUND SPORTS A LONG TIME, AND ONE THING I’VE LEARNED—CONFIDENCE AND ARROGANCE AIN’T THE SAME THING.

To me, confidence is simple.

I put the work in. I believe in myself. Now let’s go compete.

Arrogance is thinking because you’re good, you’re supposed to win. Like failure isn’t supposed to happen to you.

Well… sports don’t work like that.

You’re gonna strike out.
You’re gonna make an error.
Somebody might take your spot.
And some days, somebody is just gonna be better than you.

That’s where I find out how confident you really are.

Can you say, “I wasn’t good enough today. I gotta get better” without blaming the coach, umpire, teammate or anybody else?

Because to me, THAT’S confidence.

Confidence isn’t thinking you can’t fail.

It’s knowing failure ain’t gonna change how you feel about yourself or stop you from coming back tomorrow.

Sooner or later, this game humbles everybody.

So I’m not impressed by how confident you look when everything is going your way.

SHOW ME WHO YOU ARE WHEN NOTHING IS.

Own it.
Get better.
Come back.

That’s confidence.

And that goes way beyond sports.

Nobody talks about the courage it takes for your daughter to walk back onto the softball field after a hard game.

Everyone celebrates the big hits, perfect plays, and winning runs…

But not enough people celebrate the girl who struck out yesterday and still stepped back into the batter’s box today.

The girl who made an error and still called for the next ball.

The girl whose confidence was shaken—but showed up anyway.

As her mom, you wish you could protect her from every disappointment. But then you realize…

She isn’t becoming strong because the game is easy. She’s becoming strong because she keeps choosing not to quit. ❤️

Her best play may not be the one everyone cheers for—it may simply be showing up again.

Share this for every softball girl who keeps stepping back onto that field, even when it’s hard. 🥎

💛A Note From Coach….. The Way We Speak to Our Athletes Matters 💛

Every season, I’m reminded just how much weight our words carry — especially as coaches of young female athletes. These girls are in some of the most formative years of their lives. They’re learning not just how to hit a ball or field a grounder , they’re learning how to believe in themselves, how to overcome failure, how to bounce back after disappointment… and a lot of those lessons come directly from US!

As coaches, we have high standards. We push. We correct. We expect effort, hustle, and growth. That’s the job. But how we go about it, that’s where the heart of coaching really lives.

Far too often, young girls walk away from sports — not because they stopped loving the game, but because of how they were made to feel in it.
➡️ Too much pressure.
➡️ Not enough encouragement.
➡️ Criticism that hit deeper than it should.
➡️ Words that focused on their mistakes rather than their potential.

We sometimes forget: these girls are listening to EVERYTHING we say. They’re absorbing our tone, our body language, our reactions. And when you're 12, 13, 14 years old, the line between “coaching” and “judging” can feel razor thin.

We can demand excellence without destroying confidence.
We can hold them accountable without making them feel like failures.
We can be passionate without being harsh.
Yes — softball is a competitive sport. But for these young women, it's also a mirror. It reflects how they see themselves. And as coaches, we have a say in what they see.

So let’s make sure they see strength.
Let’s make sure they feel seen, heard, and valued.
Let’s remind them that one bad at-bat doesn’t define them, just like one mistake doesn’t erase their effort.
And when they look back years from now, let them remember the wins, yes — but more importantly, let them remember how they felt playing this game: confident, capable, encouraged, and supported.

We’re not just building athletes.

We’re shaping young women!!!!!!💚

Let’s speak to that with every practice, every game, and every word.

There comes a point in your daughter’s softball journey where one of the best things you can do for her…

is stop doing everything for her.

Let HER talk to the coach.
Let HER know what she needs to work on.
Let HER pack her bag.
Let HER remember her water.
Let HER ask the questions at her pitching lesson.
Let HER decide she wants extra reps.

And yes…sometimes let her forget something and deal with the consequence. 😬

Because eventually, this has to become her softball career.

I think as parents we can get so invested in helping our kids succeed that without realizing it, we start taking ownership of things that were supposed to become theirs.

We remind.
We schedule.
We communicate.
We fix.
We worry.

We want it SO badly for them.

But one of the greatest things sports can teach a young athlete is:

My preparation affects my outcome.

I can recognize what I need.
I can speak up for myself.
I can make a mistake and figure out what to do next.
I can want something badly enough to work for it without someone making me.

That doesn’t mean you stop supporting her.

It means your support starts looking different.

Instead of always giving her the answer, ask:

“What do you think you should do?”

Instead of immediately solving the problem:

“How do you want to handle this?”

Instead of reminding her for the fifth time:

Maybe…don’t. 😂

Because someday there won’t be a parent standing beside her making sure everything gets done.

And I don’t just want her prepared for that day.

I want her to KNOW she’s capable when it comes.

That’s bigger than softball.
