Eight Bells — Peter Gerard

The American Eagle family and the 12 Metre community remember Peter Gerard, a lifelong sailor, race official, and dedicated supporter of the International 12 Metre Class.

Peter served as Vice President of the International Twelve Metre Association for the Americas Fleet and as Americas Fleet Captain, and was Event Chair of the 2019 12 Metre World Championship in Newport, a regatta noted for its excellent race management.

A respected race officer and judge, he generously shared his time, knowledge, and leadership, helping preserve the legacy and camaraderie of the 12 Metre Class.

Fair winds and following seas, Peter. Eight Bells.

We’ve just launched a new 12 Metre Americas Fleet Regatta Gallery, featuring photos of 12 Metres competing in regattas throughout the Americas Fleet.

Take a look at the new gallery and revisit some of the racing, boats, and crews that make the 12 Metre Class so special:

We’ll continue adding more regatta photos over time, so check back often.

Today the American Eagle Family remembers Ted Turner (1938–2026), a visionary whose impact stretched from pioneering cable news to the world’s great oceans. As the founder of CNN and a generous philanthropist, his influence touched millions.

But for those of us who knew him through sailing, Ted was also a legend on the water — a passionate and fearless competitor whose commitment to the sport was equal to his drive in life. He famously skippered American Eagle, dominating the offshore scene and setting records in classic races. American Eagle under his command won the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit (SORC), Fastnet and Sydney Hobart races and helped earn him the distinguished honor of Yachtsman of the Year — an award he won multiple times.

More than achievements, Ted brought a bold spirit and deep love of the sea to every helm he steered. On American Eagle — and throughout his long racing career — he inspired countless sailors with his skill, courage, and competitive heart.
Rest in peace, Ted — your sails may have lowered, but your legacy in sailing and beyond will continue to inspire.
